The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Check out this brazen little cuss!

He's let himself be seen twice this week... He's beautiful, but I don't want this to become a habit.

Wow! What a place for a nice gallop! Straight as an arrow, level, and good footing!

The section of rails-to-trails nearest our house is paved for cyclists, but there's a section further west that's for horses. Haven't been over there yet (there's a beautiful National Park right next to our stable, and we haven't come anywhere near to covering all of that yet).

Hair, you need to extirpate that coyote right now.

They carry parvo, bordatella, and rabies, and if he has the chance he'll hamstring your horses. And they kill and eat cats for breakfast.

I recommend a nice .270 Winchester with a good scope.

You must shop at R.E.I.

SmartWool socks and polypro long johns . . .

Couldn't live without them. With this cold, I go to bed with my midweight polypros and woolie socks on, and my TurtleSkin watch cap on my head. (Just a charming picture for my dear husband to contemplate . . . along with the red nose and hacking cough!)

I'd never seen a pic of your tom cat before. He's a cutie.

I had an old Siamese neuter that would steal kittens from my mama cat and try to nurse them, washing them all the time. Funniest thing I ever saw. The kittens would nurse but of course get no milk, so they would set up a squall . . . at that point mama would locate the kittens and take them back, with a few nasty words to Mackie-Cat on the side.

She did appreciate the occasional break though. As long as she had fed them recently, he was a good baby-sitter so that she could go party or whatever. . .

I'm too suburban to shoot high power rifles at him AAM, you'll get me a gun violation, but thank you :~D

He's not interested in the horses, but I do fear for the kittens, who may range further from the house, in time, than my old cat does.

Coyotes have always been around, and frequently been in the back forty, we've found bunny parts out there often, but they usually don't allow themselves to be seen, and I just want to spook him enough to keep it that way. That's all I'm planning at this point.

Next time I see him I'll spook him.... this time I was trying to be quiet so I could get the pictures :~D

He's being pretty good with them! - most of the time... He's been trying to groom them as long as they'll tolerate it. -then sometimes, inexplicably, he just decides to take a whack at them, not bad, not aimin' to really hurt them, just bats them once and walks off. So they never know what they're gonna get with him.

I'm wondering if her neighbors weren't feeding him.

You don't think there was nothing to eat in all that trash that was out there?

Where those neighbors are is a lot closer, and a lot more exposed to the activity of the store and traffic, than where he's at... I just don't think that's it. They were ~living there~ not just dumping stuff there, and they have a dog that was out most of the time.

Like I said... Coyotes have always been back in the woods, it's not unusual to have them in the area... we have a lot of bunnies and squirrels and such. That's not the weird part. I just had rarely caught glimpse of him before, and now I've seen him twice in a week.

Well , sounds like you have a plan and are comfortable with it. Nuff from me:')
I wanted to share something else with yall though. There was a woman 10 or so years younger than me that started taking lessons about the same time I did. She took to it, in no time. She was cantering bareback when I was still working the saddle. I always wanted to be as good a rider as she was but .. Anyway, I was told she had a fall and broke her back. She's in the hospital but they say it looks like there was no spinal cord damage. Supposedly she was trotting with another rider and it was getting dark and she didn't see a ditch but the horse did and turned. I hate that. They were so fantastic together. Sometimes I would just stop and watch them ride. I really admired her.

Well, I don't know that I have a plan, really. I don't have a compelling need to try to kill him, I don't think he's a risk as long as he stays away from the compound. But regardless, I'm too suburban to go shooting at him anyway unless I really had to, there's too many houses around, it'd be dangerous to shoot anything with any kind of range, there's a house right behind him in the picture, and the horses could be back there.

I may try to nail him with a bb gun. Dad's got one I'm gonna borrow.

That's really too bad about the lady from your stable. I sure hope her body recovers, but I also hope she can keep her confidence. It can be scary to go back after you've been hurt. Falls can happen to anyone, no matter how good you are.

Oh, I doubt it. She was on trails. I just mentioned that because she could really ride well.
