The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good Morning.

Yes, winter does shut down the horsey activities somewhat. Years ago, it would not have. I used to ride year round. Snow on the ground, seeing critters tracks. So quiet and peaceful in the woods. Oh how those hooves would snowball up. I got this brilliant idea of putting butter on the bottoms to keep the ice from forming. That didn't work too well either. :')

It works for about ten steps!

I heard to spray Pam cooking spray on their feet to keep snow from balling up. It works, but not for very long.

Good morning! Well, that's something. Windy as heck here. Suppose to get a couple inches of snow. Yesterday in 50's. My last horse club newsletter had an article written by the club secretary. Her and another member's teenage daughter competed in an endurance race in West Virginia. Their first one and did really well. The young girl won in best condition. I wish I could copy, paste or scan the article. It was very nice.

I'm having a problem with my halter and I wonder if it's happened to yall. The last two times I've tried to remove it, I can't get the bar out of the strap. I pull harder and up and nothing. Poor Sarah Lee even drops her head lower to help. After several tries it just suddenly works. I don't do anything different.

Yeah . Now I know why she was cranky. Where I was rubbing may have been sore

Try washing the halter or putting some soap (bar soap) on the bar. Just rub a cake of soap on the bar. You can also take a nail and holding it with a pair of pliers over a flame, heat it and widen the hole a little bit. I'm working on the assumption we're talking about a nylon halter, not a leather one :)

It's nylon but the bar goes into metal rings on the over the neck strap. Normally I just undo it and pull up and back and it slides right out. Now the tip staying in no matter how much I lift up and then suddenly it slides out with hardly any manipulation. I thought the 1st time it was a fluke but it was the same thing today. I thought at one time I was going to have to cut it off of her.

Good luck :) I think from reading your following posts we might be talking about two different things but the soap should work either way. I go through the barn two or three times a year, grab all the halters and run them through the washing machine. (and throw away halters fixed with hay strings, etc.) Hubby amazes me sometimes :)

Good Morning!

Is everyone ready for the big turkey day? If you are traveling, be safe. We are expecting a big snow storm here. I am suppose to go to friends for dinner about an hour's drive. But, if it is too bad, I won't go. All people want to do is watch football anyways.. ugh!

While, I was making chili last night, I watched the mares out in the pasture from the kitchen window. Goofy horses were standing by the fence bucking butt to butt. Then the Jody would take off running around the pasture like a maniac. Biscuit, the lazy thing, just stood by the barn until Jody came back from her run, then they would start the butt to butt bucking. It was so funny to watch them.

You just never know what's going to amuse them, do you? Wonder what on earth they're thinking.

I am nursing a HELLACIOUS cold -- miserable coughing, sneezing, blocked sinuses, temperature, yeccch! Didn't ride yesterday because it was so cold here and I felt so rotten.

I'm just going to lie around the house today and feel sorry for myself.

Sorry about your cold... You aren't supposed to get sick over long weekends.

We had a big crunch at work before the T'giving hols . . . germs take advantage of stress.

Well, at least I have the long weekend to recuperate . . .
