This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Where exactly is the soleus muscle? My lab books show it along side and my models show it under the gastrocnemius.

The soleus is a powerful muscle in the back part of the lower leg (the calf). It runs from just below the knee to the heel, and is involved in standing and walking. It is closely connected to the gastrocnemius muscle and some anatomists consider them to be a single muscle, the triceps surae. Its name is derived from the solefish whose shape it resembles. The soleus is located in the superficial posterior compartment of the leg. It originates from the posterior (back) surfaces of the head of the fibula and its upper third, as well as the middle third of the internal border of the tibia. Its other end forms a common tendon with the gastrocnemius muscle; this tendon is known as the calcaneal tendon or Achilles tendon and inserts onto the posterior surface of the calcaneus, or heel bone.

I am so upset with my boss that I came home for lunch to keep from quitting but the day is still long.
The pony was so good. She never spooked once at all the commotion goin on around her. She was very easy to lead, not to fast, not dragging at the lead.
I'm a bit concerned for her tho. She is soooooo fat.I told Kristy she need to get her dry lotted for at least part of the day.
It was very interesting to watch Harley and Rocky. They both started acting like idiots when they saw her. Harley actually acted afraid, snorting and running around with his tail up and standing all stiff staring at her. It was funny. I think she was in season because Rocky put on his stud show. Bowing up and leaning on the panels (thank heavens I had the panels up), rearing and bucking. I wish I had got pictures of that, but it was hard to watch all the kids, visit, lead pony and take pictures.
I had tied Harley to the tree. I didn't know if we would lead the kids in the fence, but we just landed up in the yard.

The pony sounds great. Is that the little girl who wanted to ride by herself? She seems a little shy or timid when faced with it! You know... When ecurbh's family was here, we did rides on Bay for all the kids, which we planned, and then his adult family members, his parents and siblings wanted to ride too, we still led them, just to be on the safe side, and you know, they didn't really mind. Only one adult, that had ridden before, got to ride alone.
It'd be fun if I could do that with my pony... reliably.
The pony is dangerously fat. She's at high risk for founder, and that'd be a shame. Is that just grass or are they feeding her?
Sounds like you need another job coz you're mad more often than not these days. If you don't, one of these days the top of your head is just gonna blow clean off.

LOL!!! I'll bet that's EXACTLY what they were thinking! Most stud horses would hump a stump if they thought it smelled right. ;o)

That pony is soooooo cute! She IS kinda fat, but I don't think I've ever seen a pony that wasn't. I agree with you though about the dry lot. It wouldn't hurt nothing but her feelings. It sounds like she's a really nicely mannered pony too, which is really rare. Most of 'em get very spoiled. I'm glad they all had a good time.
Most men would too. ;o)

Well, I just got out of the shower, I stripped all the stalls and sweated off five pounds... (I hope) - it's grey and dark but surprisingly muggy out today.
Gotta get presentable now and go to town.

Harley was the funny one. You'd think they would understand that it is just a small horse.
Your right, I don't think Lilly wanted any part of going by herself. She was happy just being led.
Her mother and father are the ones I told you about way last year that got the 2 mules. I think they both have been bucked off now. They are thinking of sending them off to trainers.
This pony is way too fat. And they aren't feeding her nothing but pasture. I think she should be dry lotted and fed nothing but hay for a while, and very little of that. She just seems soooooo sweet it would be really sad if she foundered. I asked Kristy today who originally broke her but she didn't know. But she did say that alot of kids at the ranch, who have been raised around horses their whole lives rode her alot a few years ago. Their parents were around so they wouldn't have been allowed to just run her and jerk her around. These are kids who were taught how to ride properly and care for a horse. I've always thought that ponies got a bad rap for being labled stubborn and mean. So many of them have just been handled by kids any which away, and I don't blame the ponies for getting ornery.

Well you're right abot that. Rocky humped a round bale into the ground one time and it didn't even smell like anything:)

I agree with you on ponies. People don't seem to invest the same money and effort in training them, they just put kids on them and off they go and blame the pony. I don't think they're ornery or stubborn either by nature, they're just barely broke and yanked around without a lot of reward sometimes. :~D
It's really sad/amazing too, this pony was put to pasture with a 2 year old stud who was a full size horse, several years ago, before Charlies friends got her. The people didn't think he could do anything, (why does this happen so often) When Charlies friends got her they couldn't figure out why she just kept getting fatter and fatter....
She had a foal that was dang near as big as she was. Joe told Kristy that in the winter she does have trouble with one of her hips and he thinks it's from that foaling.
