This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Yeah. But he was in a bandage that went from fetlock to above the hock. I had to be careful even in the stall as too much movement rubbed sores on the top of the hock. Had he been able to move around more, I couldn't have kept the bandage on him.
We are talking about a serious bandage here too. I used cotton sheeting (Gamgee) first, then panty-hose material type wrap to hold that in place. Next layer was a white gauze wrap. Next, I vetwrapped the whole thing, then put the stretchy elastic wrap over that. I went from above and in front of the hock all the way down the leg around the fetlock. It was a very expensive bandage too. I spent a fortune on materials.
I was ready to turn him out long before I got the okay from my vet. Finally, last April, he said I could leave the wrap off and turn him out some in a small paddock. Then, the wrap went back on at night. By that time, I was wrapping with a smaller bandage with less layers. After a month of that, I just unilaterally decided that he didn't need the wrap anymore and stopped wrapping. I started water treatment where I would run warm water over the wound for about 15 minutes. Then, I would tea tree oil it, Wonderdust it, and then spray on the Alushield. That worked really well and he started healing up fast. The water and fresh air combined with moderate exercise did the trick IMHO.
Before I started with the Wonderdust, the vet would use a scalpel when needed to keep the granulation tissue below the level of the skin so that it would grow over the wound. It was neat to watch him just carve the wound as needed. Granulation tissue doesn't have any nerves in it so no painkillers were needed. And, Henkell was a great patient so didn't need sedating.
I am an expert at bandaging wounds on horses now.
Well Rowdy isn't appendix bred, but that doesn't necessairly mean he doesn't have TB in him.
The Arabs we use to have and all the other QH's we've had grow thick winter coats. Sometimes I wish they didn't grow so much:), it's really a mess in the spring.

That's a good skill to have...
~knocking on wood~ I've never had one that serious. One mare I had in high school got a wire cut that was like a bracelet cut around her fetlock. Same thing with the proud flesh - that grossed me out.
But we also had her immobilized for the first month or so with stalling and bandages. every time she moved, she opened it back up again.
I've seen others with wounds like yours, and like FIAB's, and they just take a really long time to close up.
Boy that does sound like a big chore. But you did good.
Becky
Tiff's QH doesn't grow much coat, and she doesn't look Appendix either.... she's one of your standard big body small feet show bred type QHs.
I think it has to be something genetic.
And there's a full month in the spring that I can't stand to have Bay anywhere near me, or my gear. ;~D
That's what I'm looking for:')
You did good:')
Oh it looks awful but a lot better than it did in the beginning.
Great pictures - Henkell does a good Arab imitation :)
I should have taken some pics of that furniture.
Wow - that's been a long haul hasn't it.
I enjoy the pics.... I like to take pics of mine runnin' around too. You sure had nice weather today.
It's odd the way some do grow winter coats and some don't. An Arab mare I had, straight Egyptian and only second generation from an import grew so thick a coat she looked almost like a mustang. Two of my app mares have very thin coats and appaloosas started out as mustangs more or less. I guess it could be crosses to Thoroughbred back in their lines but it doesn't seem to run in a particular line at all.
Okie gets long hair. Sarah Lee just gets a thick short coat. You don't notice until you brush it out.
That's the way my horses are, some have hair two inches long and come spring you can pull it out in hands full. Then some have very short thick hair. Then a couple that just don't seem to grow enough hair to keep warm.
What triggers in their body to grow a winter coat?
If you can remeber who is was, I'll go by and get pictures.
I have no idea. He was a tall, nice looking, kind of quiet cowboy.
Is it getting cold at your place?
