This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Holy $hit! That's expensive! But I'm sure it's worth it if it'll get all the weeds out of the pasture and hay field. I may check at the Co-Op to see if they come spray like they come spread lime. If they don't, there's quite a few farmers in our area that may have a spray rig and be interested in doing it.
Becky brings up something important that I often forget to mention when we are talking about problems and punishments... When you get him to improve, always praise and relax, even if your blood pressure is still up. You have to force yourself sometimes to not stay mad. Giving him some praise for any forward movement and a lot of grief for backward movement is the way to go.
I thought he was cute too. It's so funny the man that owns this pumpkin patch lives right by the highway, and he has the mother and father of this baby. He has a big pen fenced off right at the side of the highway. It's really odd to be driving down the highway and suddenly there are two camels grazing right there:). It's not something you'd except too see driving thru this small town:). We have one other house in Bixby who has a camel grazing by the road. Kind of funny. I've always wondered why anyone would have a camel.

Right, the identical second:) they make any forward motion the punishment needs to stop and praise given. Even if it's just one step. If they take one step forward and stop, you give some praise then start again with light pressure for more forward motion, but if they again go back you have to nail them again.

Good morning. Anyone going to se Dreamer? I am going this morning.
My daughter, DIL and I are thinking of having a girls night/day and going sometime. It looks like it's going to be a good movie:)

He may be rubbing it on some of the trees. Grace did that with her sweet itch and I finally had to just cut it completely off. I didn't know what was doing it at first because her mane would be all ratted up and sticky feeling and I thought one of the other horses was chewing on it, but I just happened to see yer yesterday out by a pine tree in the pasture rubbing the back of her now maneless neck for all she was worth. I guess the sticky stuff was pine sap.
I think Harley is doing the same thing. His mane was really nice at the beginning of the summer, now down towards his withers it's all thin and short:(. When I got him he had a complete bald spot about 2-3 inches long in his mane. The girl I got him from fed round bales in a round bale feeder. He had rubbed it off reaching thru for hay. I wasn't sure that spot would ever grow it was rubbed off so short. But by the end of the first winter (last year) it had caught up witht he rest.

I'll bet there was something, maybe a deer, down the trail. I don't know why, but deer seem to freak most horses out.
Boy Tuffy sure looks good!
I was afraid that your billet strap knots were going to be too high when I told you to try that but I didn't know how bad they'd be. That girth strap that's part of the pad looks like it ought to be long enough to use with the girth you've got on there if that girth ring has a tongue. You could buckle it up like you do an english girth only it'd just have one big buckle instead of two.
LOL! Is he awake in this photo?
He looks great!
Well, I was supposed to go on a trail ride tomorrow at Lake Ray Roberts. Key word here is "was". I just checked my Coggins and it expired 4 days ago! They check them at the gate going in.
No way I can get one done and back by tomorrow AM so I will be missing this trail ride. Time to call the vet to to draw blood.
I am now officially bummed.
LOL! Horses are so funny!
You are right. Smokey is a tri-color. It shows up best when he is wet. When he is dry he looks white, with 'off color' dirty looking patches, but when wet, you see all the different areas of pigmentation come through. Very pretty. : )
Bummer indeed.
This Coggins test thing has come up before... They aren't required here and I've only ever heard of people doing them when they went out of state.
ALL - I'm off traveling today, be back tonight. :~D
Sorry to hear you got hurt from someones elses stupidity. I would hate it if someone borrowed my things without asking. Are you ok this morning? : )
Oh, so sorry you will miss your ride:(
Coggins test are required around here too rather your from out of state or not. It wouldn't be such a pain if it really helped, but IMO it doesn't. Just stupid beauacracy that was thought up by someone who didn't have a clue.
Becky
Hard to believe he has so many health problems, huh? He looks like he feels fine.
That's also a very good idea but I'm gonna need a longer girth. That one is a 34 and it's too short to do that. The biggest one I've seen is a 36, I'm gonna go get one as soon as I get the chance.
That's what I did to finally get Tennessee in the trailer at the vet's. I'd ask him to get in while twirling the end of the lead and lightly smacking him on the butt with the lead's latego "popper". When he started to step in I stopped smacking and when I saw that he'd gone as far in as he was going to go, I'd make him back back out. Then I'd send him in again, this time with with a little more smack on the end of the lead. I repeated this over and over, gradually increasing the amount of "smack" and reducing the amount of time that I'd let him stand there and relax while being part way in the trailer before making him start over. He finally figured out the the trailer was a pretty nice place to be.
He's awake in spurts. He would be moving along just fine then try to take off bucking. I was afraid he might do that, hence the side reins. They limited his bucking ability enough to make it not nearly as fun.
He has extra energy since he's been cooped up for so long. When he gets back to normal, the energy level will be more like what he was when we rode with you: barely there.
