This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
It's a shame that it was so expensive. If it was me, I'd be retiring in that cabin !!
35!!! Brrrr....We are still in t-shirts! : )
You got that right, me too! Lay in a bunch of firewood, supplies and hunker down for the winter. Sounds like a plan.
This summer and fall, have been one of the nicest in a long, long time. Too hot at times. Now, to see what winter will bring.
I was hoping to get the pasture sprayed and seeded before it was too late, this fall. There is no way, it can be done in the spring. Unless, we would not have normal rain fall, it will be too wet to work. I have that nasty Swamp grass taking over. The pasture is mowed as soon its dry enough, and then when needed. The Extension office sent me pasture maintenance information, that is very infomative. This fall has been so nice, I really messed up not getting after the pasture. The fence line was sprayed with Spectrecide, which worked very well.
Good morning~
Man, do I need some coffee!
Our weather changed thru the night. It's gray, windy, and chilly here this morning. Now it feels like fall. It's suppose to be in the 60's. My grandson is on fall break this week...when did they start giving kids a fall break? I'm going to take him to the local pumpkin patch in town to buy some pumpkins.
This place is amazing. It's run by a local man who has been running produce stand in Bixby for as long as I can remember. About 4 years ago he bought some land on the corner where I turn onto the highway to go to town. He built a pecan processing shop, there and in Oct. he sets up a hugh pumpkin stand. I think he has some animals down there, goats, and ponies too for petting. Anyway, I bet he grins from ear to ear all thru Oct. The place is just packed from open to close by people from all over. During the weeks bus loads of kids from schools that are pretty far away come in for a field trip. All because of pumpkins. It's amazing. I'll get some pictures. Every year we are just amazed at the traffic this place generates, But it's kind of cool to see all the little kids climbing all over the stacks and stacks of pumpkins.

Mornin'! ~sip~
mmmmmmm.....Ty......
Rose - received and replied! Love ya, chica!
Cool! I'll have to see if they carry it at the Co-Op. Is it too late to use it, or should I wait 'til next year?
Kids are nuts about pumpkins... Not sure why :~D
I think picking out a pumpkin is possibly even more exciting for a kid than choosing a Christmas tree.
The corn maze place we went to also sells pumpkins, you get to go pick one out of the field, which is also very popular.
I hadn't seen it here either until a few years ago but it sure is awful. The site I looked it up on showed it's range to be pretty much everywhere east of the Rockies. Consider yourself lucky if you haven't seen it yet.
The guy that owns this place also sells them at his produce store in Bixby. He just opened this second location about 4 years ago. I use to take my kids to the place in town to pick out pumpkins then come home and carve them. It was alot of fun.
This new location is used only to process pecans, which is a big market here in Bixby, except during Oct when he opens it up to sell pumpkins. I've wondered if he got this idea all by himself, or if he saw it done somewhere else. It seems it was a great money maker. When he sold them in town it was always pretty busy, but I don't remember seeing the school buses comeing in from so far away for field trips.
This same guy sells Christmas trees too in Dec. but only at his place in town. He hasn't ever sold them at the pecan processing location. It might not be as big a market. We have another local man that has a Christmas Tree farm where you can go cut your own. It's way out south of here, so I've never seen how busy that place gets.
The ranch that Charlie ropes at, that I have talked about use to have a spooky hay ride during Oct. The traffic that generated in Bixby use to just about choke down the whole town. I can't remember the exact figure now, but I remember being told what the ranch made off that and it was astronomical. It basically was the money maker that kept the ranch running the rest of the year. They don't do it now, because they had a lawsuit filed against them when some kid fell of the wagon and got hurt.....The insurance went up so much they just decided not to do it anymore. Sad.
Anyway all these country type recreations sure draw crowds in from the cities.

See that stuff behind Cyn? That's our invasive curse. It's called Scotch Broom (or Scotch Bloom, depending on who you ask). That is about 3 years growth of it. When I moved here the whole pasture and property were overtaken with it, trunks on it get to be 2-3 inches in diameter and it gets twice that tall. You can't navigate through it, it's impassible. In the spring it is loaded with blooms that are the most hideous shade of yellow and almost everyone is allergic to it. I mow and spray our pasture to keep it from coming back.
The Dept of Transportation imported this stuff, planted it alongside the freeway.
Now it's taken over any unmaintained property within 10 miles of the freeway throughout the whole state. They could have planted Daisies.... Daisies are nice! :~D
That sounds alot like our ragweed. Everyone is allergic to it and it can really take over fast. That's what I've got out in my pasture, and it's only about 1 years worth of growth.
Becky
Oh, and what was to point of them bringing it in???
Becky
They brought it in as part of the landscaping along the freeway, erosion control.... Did they think it was pretty? I dunno. Somebody, somewhere, made that decision, and I can't guess why, but they bought a LOT of it, it's everywhere, this side of the mountains anyhow.
I'm gonna guess whoever's decision it was had to leave town and change his name.
#%&#$*! lawyers.
Sounds like a cool show. From what I've read of Monty Roberts in his books, he had a pretty rough upbringing. His dad was cruel to both his horses and his kid and that's why he started the training methods that he did. I have his book that's more about how to deal with people, but I haven't read it yet. Sounds like I need to make time.
Morning. Liking your instructor makes a much more pleasant semester, huh? I used to zero in on the one thing I liked about them and go from there. I had to look really hard to find it with a couple though. I had problems with both my English teachers and my psy nursing instructor. The English teachers liked me by the end of the class though because even though they never understood my humor about the read pen, I loved literature and learning to write. The feather brain nurse though... She was a challenge. She actually gave me a C because I told her I didn't have time to play and read stuff like peoples magazines! Actually , she might have had a point. While I was flirting with ulcers she was probably out on her sail boat reading about Freud.
Are you packed and ready? Yall may have to get out fast. Crazy storms.
