One of the few truly unique hip-hop artists to revel atop the commercial side of the industry during the early 2000s, Kanye West spent most of his time producing flavorful
hits for Jay-Z and other top-tier rappers, yet he eventually seized the opportunity to launch his own rapping career as well. Granted, West himself wasn't a phenomenal rapper, but he had a lot going for him. For one, he was witty, coming up with off-the-wall lyrics like "She's got a light-skinned friend look like Michael Jackson/Got a dark-skinned friend look like Michael Jackson" that were smart and funny at the same time, even if they didn't employ elaborate rhyming schemes à la Rakim or street-prophet motifs à la Nas. Secondly, he had a singsong flow that made him seem like an everyman rapper as if he were your homeboy from down the street (or perhaps you yourself), even though he was, in fact, a seasoned rapper who'd been spitting game since he first heard Run-D.M.C. way back in the day.
He's like quite a few rappers. Musically and lyrically very talented, but political half-wits who always seems to miss their big chance to STFU.
Perhaps he had stage fright or something, but the remarks he made during the fund raiser were almost unintelligible -stumbling, poor grammar, not well thought out, and almost illiterate. How is it possible he is considered "quick" and "smart" and an "intelligent" rapper?
BECAUSE RELATIVELY SPEAKING, HE IS
Maybe he was emotional.
oth songs were enormous successes, partly so because of West's trademark beatmaking style, which was largely sample-based -- in these brilliant cases the former track appropriating snippets of the Doors' "Five to One," the latter the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back."
So he's a musical parasite. BFD.
That's razor sharp wit, I tell you.
Why make apologies for stupidity?
Funny? barely. Smart? Cant see it.
Just another moroninc, uneducated, loser capitalizing on race-baiting and stupidity that leeches like Jesse Jackson and orthers depend on to get their funding and concubines.
He did use a few samples as far as his hip-hop is concerned. He can't flow at all.
The music he produces originally is top-notch. That's spoken as a music fan, not a West fan. I don't agree with Prince on anything politically, but he's my all-time favorite.

Well, *my* sides are splitting. ;-)
That's what constitutes "witty ... smart ... and funny" in their book???? For this, I'm supposed to think this guy is anything but a car wash trainee??? Man, the bar must be set awfully low in the "rappin'" bizness.

I know nothing about Kanye, but it's SOP in the hip hop production milieu to sample music. It's tied in with the art of DJ'ing. Early hip hop DJ's/producers used to sample Kraftwerk's "Numbers" and "Tour de France", among others.
he was a virtual unknown beforehand and after a couple weeks worth of run here, he will go back into obscurity.
This guy isn't Eminem. He will eventually go away.
Just another a-hole.
I would agree with you about Prince although I still find it hard to forget the disgusting sight of him performing in a purple speedo.
