I already know the toaster's role. There's a fire at the heroine's partner's apartment. I needed a plausible cause that the authorities would cite - but it is really arson and meant to intimidate our heroic agents. An "antique" toaster would do it. "It's a family heirloom and works just fine! You should really try old-fashioned, real toast sometime instead of that vat-grown packaged stuff." *chortle*
