..and it hasn't turned north yet.
Unbelievable...
Just confirmed - it's dropped to 902. I didn't hear what the current wind speeds are, but...that's not good.
I think the outer fringes have already landed....just looking at the radar. Winds up to 30mph.
It just floors me that the LA governor took the initial threat so lightly and that the people took their cue from her. Very few evacuated because it wasn't taken seriesly enough.
Just think, if this had been thought out at all, there would be very little threat to loss of life. As is, this will be devastating. The potential loss of life due to the ineptitude of the LA governor is staggering.
It's speeding up too. Someone on the hurricane thread said ETA is now 2-5 am.
At least if it speeds up, there will be less time to strengthen further. I guess. Less time for anything to happen to weaken it, too, though.
Praying for your family. Most of my Mississippi ties have passed on. However, I do have cousins in Gulfport. Hope they got out.
The forward winds on the Northeast side of the eye have already reached the MS and AL Gulf Coast. Gulf Shores has high waves, but that is the barrier island. The barrier islands for the MS Gulf Coast are well off shore. Ship Island is 12 miles out, and there's where you'd find the major waves on the MS Coast. The winds are definitely picking up, though.
Thanks for the prayers. As long as Katrina stays on the expected track, they should be fine. If she moves further East, it could be VEY bad. At least my sister could go over to Pascagoula to the Courthouse. She works there, so she'd have access to the place anyway, but it's likely going to be opened as a shelter if it's expected to get really bad. My younger sister was freaked by Ivan, and it wasn't that bad on the Coast so maybe she'll head inland, or find a safer place than her home to ride it out.
Yeah, I guess so. But I was thinking about people getting stuck out on the highways when it hits.
My gosh...that'd be awful, wouldn't it? Middle of the night, unable to move because of the traffic, and then have it hit?
I suppose that's why they say they're ending the contraflow - to try to prevent that? Though it seems like the alternative isn't much better.
*Sigh* Shoudda been doing this yesterday...or even Friday.
It's into 500 yr storm category now.
Ruthy hasn't checked in again yet.
Scary. Just... scary. The thought of all that energy headed for thousands people who can't get out... and the Superdome thing sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Even if it holds, what happens when the lights go out? Will it be the evilness or strength of human character that dominates?
Hi all - back from brunch buffett at the casino. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner all in one sitting. Waffles, pancakes, french toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash, prime rib, teriyaki chicken, pasta alfredo, salmon, fried cod, mashed potatos, a stuffed pepper and a roll.
We can barely move around. Hopefully, no one will offer us a wafer thin after-dinner mint.
Call me a pessimist, but I'm betting on evilness.
If the Dome doesn't collapse or anything, they're going to be in the middle of a lake with no power, water, or facilities for who knows how long.
