The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I'm thinking of sifting a deep layer of sand back there around the coop. The sand back there is packed and hard...no tracks. But if I sift it through some hardware cloth or something into a deep layer, I bet I could get some good tracks that I could fill with plaster of paris or some such.

Though...I suppose they would have carried a chicken off...not just shredded it.

Hard to tell...you know the raindrops on it make it a bit obscured. I keep thinking a see a nail mark, but not sure.

If nothing else, I at least know I will *eventually* identify it...it will just take time.

You could set a Havahart trap with Puffy as bait...

That's what I think...a dog, coyote, fox...they'd carry off the kill. A cat wouldn't just rip of the head and eat the innards, leaving all the parts.

It's gotta be something wild...I can't imagine a domesticated animal doing something like this...

It's really hard to see. How big is the track, sis?

it looks closest to a skunk.

Could be...

Hmmm...I gotta find out! I just want to know what's lurking in my yard!

And I want to know if it's a wild critter or just some neighborhood pet before I set up a live trap.

I'm pretty sure animal control will lend me a live trap. But I don't want to be bothered trapping some cat or dog.

It's hard to tell because what might be track could actually be raindrop! Maybe 1.5 inches across?

I seem to remember a family back home that had trouble with a weasel getting into the chicken coop...but I dunno if they have those where you are, or what their tracks look like.

If'n I get stuck on Nanowrimo, that might have to be a subplot.

Althought I cain't quite figger out how to get a chicken into one of them trench coats...or a stocking cap...

Heh...for some reason that reminds me of a kid's book I read a long, long time ago. Can't remember the details...but it was called Bunnicula. Vampire bunny.

Heh heh! She rubbed ol' Issy out, did she?

Well...I guess I could just go ahead and set a trap...have animal control deal with it.

Well...if it was a wealthy assassin chicken, it could afford to have special coats tailored for it.
