Oh, dear... poor chicken. Does TheChickenExperiment come to a temporary end when the three remaining chickens are no more?
What a horrible thing to have to deal with. Makes my Monday look a lot better.
Yes, it will come to an end. No more pet chickens till we get our bit of land. Then only two chickens at a time will be "pets"...the rest will be pure livestock.
Just went out and spoke with my neighbor over the back fence... told him what happened. He said he didn't hear anything but the other night he had his house open and he smelled a skunk. Said it was strong, like it was walking right under the window.
I know a skunk would sure do it...
We shall see! ;o)
A skunk might do it, but you'd smell it.
Her neighbor certianly did!
Some might start calling that evidence...
So where was Puffy last night, between sundown and sunup?
I dunno...the coop is toward the back of the yard and we have about a quarter acre. The coop is actually closer to my back neighbor's house than to mine.
Could be I guess... I'd just think you'd have smelled it in the coop.
Do chickens kill each other?
Not unless it sprayed, which it wouldn't do unless it was threatened and a chicken wouldn't threaten it...and the coop is all open...just chicken wire, mostly, so the smell wouldn't stick around unless it was sprayed.
I'm just thinking it's gotta be a coon or a skunk and I'm leaning skunk now that I know we have one in the area. I can't imagine a cat doing it and a dog couldn't get in without digging a hole under the fence...I don't think...
Wish I could put up a webcam!
Not like this...they can peck another chicken to death, but Isabelle was torn up.
but shredding?
I don't think so!
I'll go with the skunk theory.
Maybe it was a fox.
Don't know about foxes, but I have seen coyotes just a mile away in the soybean fields...but don't know how they'd get in, we've got a privacy fence.
But the scent is a defense mechanism. The skunk wouldn't have felt threatened.
Chikken Death Match! Woot!
I doubt one chicken could decapitate another, though.
I've smelled them camping, before...just going by. The smell comes and goes as they pass. But a chicken at night wouldn't make them spray...chickens don't do anything at night. You can pick up the most rowdy chicken at night and it won't do a thing because they go almost comatose! It's weird. I've gone out and found them on top of the coop and just picked them up and thrown them into the coop and they'll just lay there like a rock!
And whatever it was took the head with it. It's nowhere to be found.
I'm not really wanting the jedis to stumble onto it. Wouldn't be the worst thing, but I'd like to avoid it.
Did, um, did she look eaten? Were there signifigant other parts missing?
