The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

There's nothing like driving through the mountains when it's chilly and smelling wood smoke in peoples' fireplaces.

They've outlawed leaf-burning in most large Michigan cities. But one year, visiting relatives in Chesaning (pop. 5000), I drove through while some folks were burning leaves. I was flooded with memories of that aroma back when I was a kid, and the government kindly let us burn leaves.

Around here, fall color is always "iffy". You need the right weather, sunny skies, no rain, and a weekend. Most of the best fall color around here is wasted on weekdays.

One particularly fine day found me driving down a one-lane country dirt road, with nothing but oaks and maples everywhere. The sky was a brilliant blue, and the canopy was flourescent red and yellow. Going up a small hill, there was nothing on the road ahead of me except bright blue sky.

I don't have a picture of it, but it's stored securely in my heart.

Stop it...stop it!
This exchange has become entirely too silly.
Far too silly...

Very well...carry on.
But you've been warned.

Well, we did our "Christmas Cards for the Troops" event...I planned and organized the whole thing and it went perfectly.

We had it at a friend of mine's church...her husband is the pastor and we had it in her fellowship hall. Everyone brought snacks and drinks.

The Marine that I had come in and speak (a homeschooling dad) was wonderful...he's why we had to do the Christmas cards now...he deploys in a week or so. He spoke on just the right levels, to little kids and young people alike.

The kids asked some great questions...Matthew asked how much an M-16 cost. Some other kid asked if his sword was sharp. He said it wasn't and Joshua asked "How do you kill people with a dull sword?"

Then we all went to work on our cards...my table is covered with drying cards!

I thought I'd need a unit to send them to, Rick, but it looks like the Marine unit this guy belongs to is the one I'll be sending them to. They are a Marine reserve unit here in Broken Arrow.

When it was all over, the adults and the young people cleaned everything up in no time. It really went off without a hitch.

I'm so proud I got to finally do it again...you know they wouldn't let me after I messed it up so bad that time...told me I couldn't do it any more and it was just dropped. Such an important thing, imo...it shouldn't have been dropped especially during this time. They should have let me have another chance.

It took the group splitting and us ridding ourselves of those arrogant leaders for me to finally get to organize it again.

How many Hobbit Hole pocket knives do they need?

Note to entire Hobbit Hole:

I just got on another 25 Camillus BK2s, and did some counting. 75 are promised, to date. Aside from the small problem of paying for them, we seem to have more requests coming in than knives going out.

Part of that problem is the engraving. It takes almost two weeks for me to unpack the knives, take the handles off, take the blades in, bring them back, and put everything back together. THEN individual knives are packed, and mailed out.

While I hate doing it, leaving the Camillus BK2s unengraved until the backlog is gone will cut off about two weeks on turnaround time. Requests for a BK2 are taking over a month, and this will cut things down considerably.

Comments? Suggestions?

The engraving is your call.

My comment is more of a plea. Please everyone who hangs here and calls the hobbit hole home, Please Please help winmag out and send $$$ now, regularly and often! We know Rick is too much of a softy to say NO to any soldier... lets not abuse his good nature. Lets just say this has cost thousands more than he has yet received in help from us. ecurbh and I send donations every month, I hope you all will consider doing the same, whatever you can spare.

841 knives have been sent to date. Think about that.

FrodoPlease support our Hobbit Hole Pocket knives for the troops project.

Thank you!

If I may, if this is a BA CHEF group activity, might the members of BA CHEF contribute to buy knives to be sent with the Christmas cards?

When we've recieved requests for a whole unit's worth of knives lately, we've been asking those wives and point-people that are asking to please organize a fundraiser to pay for it. Especially because the most requested knives now are not the little $20 pocketknives.. they are the fancier sheath knives, for which winmag will have to give our current cost.... I don't know off hand.
