The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Did I ever tell the story about the time we had raccoons in our fireplace?

Ah, ok. Just remember if you do meet a werecritter to grab the gun with the silver bullets.

Nahh... the chimney didn't have anything on top to prevent animals from making their way down inside. Squirrels got in several times (both alive and dead) and one time a pair of raccoons climed down. Their weight caused the flue damper to open, dumping them into the fireplace. Luckily they couldn't get the glass doors open, and they couldn't climb back up the flue, so they were stuck. We called animal rescue and a guy came out, put on an arm-length canvas glove, hauled one out and stuffed it into a cage.

We don't know where the other one went... either we miscounted in the excitement, or it managed to climb up and out while we were waiting for the animal rescue guy to arrive.

After that we insisted that the landlord get the chimney fixed, and since then we haven't had an unwanted visitors....

Hehehe... that had to be quite the way to start a day. They can be pretty furious little buggers when they're cornered.

My chimney has been coon-free so far, but I did get a little family of squirrels living in the exhaust flue for the bathroom fan. It was kinda funny... I never would have noticed they were there... until I turned on the bathroom fan... and they got most upset. I think they moved out.

The poor animal rescue guy had a heck of a time, even with the thick canvas glove on. The 'coon wrapped all four limbs around the guy's arm and started biting... the bites couldn't penetrate the material, but just the pressure of them was hurting the guy.

I think he was glad he only had to remove one.

They're vicious little buggers. And I once had a cat that thought he was king spit. Was always worried that he'd try to take on a coon... to which he'd lose and lose in really expensive veterinary ways.
