There's a Radio Shack in the little shopping center by Walmart.

Is it any bigger than the one at the mall?

'Course...on the other hand, it'd mean driving, so likely any pay difference would be eaten up.

*sigh* I'm just thinking they're going to tell me "We'll let you know if we need anyone", just like everyone else has done. I wonder if they give students preference, on account of CSU being the biggest employer.

I suppose there are clothing stores too, but some of 'em...*shudder*

Yes, I'm still here. Yes, I'm stalling.

I don't know about size... There is a bus that goes there, though. I don't think students get any preference on employment except for on-campus jobs.

What about going to some of those places, like Best Buy, where you've filled out an application and asking to speak to a manager?

So far managers have been totally elusive at the average bigger store. I can ask, I can plead, but the most that happens is that clerk-gal or clerk-guy (and sometimes it's hard to tell) looks pained, sighs deeply, turns their back to me and calls the manager on the internal phone system and then tells me I'll be called if they really need someone.

But I could try, I suppose.

Did I say brick wall? I'm sorry...I meant...brick wall.

Went to Radio Shack. But they only do applications on-line and their connection was down. So although I got to talk a bit to the manager, the chances of him connecting my name with my face now may be slender.

They do have an open house deal for all Radio Shack locations coming up. So there's that.

And I applied at Eddie Bauer, as about the only other place at that mall that doesn't make me cringe. Didn't get to talk to the manager, though - he was interviewing someone else. And the gal I did talk to gave me the "We'll call if..." spiel. Which means...they won't. Probably.

Open house deal? Like they're looking for people to hire?

Anyway, good for you. Just gotta keep on trying even though it's obnoxious, tedious, and painful...

I guess they have a video and presentation and a personality profile test they make people go through...and it sounds like they do all that and then keep names on hand for when openings occur. The man I spoke to wasn't sure there were really many openings right now, but I'm guessing they're gearing up for the holidays. I can at least go.

But it may be just as competitive as any of the other jobs I've applied for. For a basic retail job. *sigh*

Lunch and cool off...then I try the bookstore again, I guess. And the Best Buy. Maybe Circuit City or Linens and Things and other stuff in that compound. Wonder if Petsmart pays more than minimum wage?

Check it out, you never know!

What about Kinkos? Or the wine stores, or the bike shops?

Kinkos might work OK, except for the folks I'd be working with. But I'd get to work with paper. Mmmm...paper. And they'd probably appreciate someone with some troubleshooting skills.

Bike shop...I'd think they'd want someone with repair experience. But I dunno.

I may also at least call the froo-froo guitar shop down town. My gut feeling is that they almost never hire, and when they do, they'd prefer someone who can double as a repairperson / teacher. But it's worth a shot. And maybe I could convince 'em to start carrying my favorite brands. Ya never know.

I could sell guitars. I know I could. And they need a website. I couldn't make one other than something really basic, but I might be able to convince 'em to make one. This is the closest shop to carry fancy brands for a lot of folks in the area and north of here, and if they had more of a presence, they could do really well, like the guitar shop in Littleton, NH, which has expanded a LOT over the past five years.

Sorry...got carried away with muh daydreamin' there.

For whatever reason, it's really hard to get a post office job. I don't know why!

I guess I'd never imagined it was THAT hard. At first I thought she was joking when she said three years, or that she'd misspoken. Guess not!

Amazing.

Most of the Kinko's here have computer resources too. If your's there do too, they might be looking for someone to help customers use the computers.

I couldn't make one other than something really basic, but I might be able to convince 'em to make one.

You'd be surprised how producing even a basic website can impress people who don't know how to do one at all. It's not a bad idea at all.

She's not exaggerating I bet. I had an experience trying to help a client get a job with them, when they were opening a new huge regional sorting facility, and they were supposedly hiring a lot of people. It was all about getting on the list and they had tests you have to take to get on the list. It was still hard to jump through all the hoops then, and they were in a hurry to hire about 100 people.

~shrugs~

So...can add Kinkos to my list of places-to-apply. Seems like that, at least, would be a place where one could advance a bit as your capabilities became known.

And I haven't actually been to the guitar store for a leisurely visit yet. Might be worth going down to play stuff and chat a bit and then pop the employment question. It's such a small place that I seriesly doubt they have openings about ever...but ya never know.

Yep, and from what she said, they use that list more or less until they run out of people. So until they run out of folks to hire for openings, there won't be another test. AND you have to test within a given area - so even if there's a test scheduled in another region, that doesn't mean you can passing it to get on the local list.

I never woulda thunk it. But now I know.

I took the Post Office test YEARS ago. When I was still living at home (early 80s). Told the Postmaster who went to our church and knew me from birth.

He said "but you've already got a job."

That's as far as I ever got.

Ask them whether they've considered having a web presence. Perhaps you could offer your help in that area if it's something they're looking to get into...

Networking and collecting contacts is the best way to find a job.
