Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Heh, I was comparing the two commercials, not the characters (you'll see what I mean.)
I'm not finding the other commercials online anywhere... I may have to record them myself, if I can catch them.

Somewhere out there... is the Lt Col, or the Sgt, or the Specialist that put together the massive fiber and multiplexer network for the gizmos in Qatar. And it probably wasn't even on the guy's job description. I've seen it in IBM, where the biggest genius is some ordinary Joe Programmer who had the time to figure everything out, and make things work properly, PLUS do stuff that was never even dreamed.
I had "insoluble" problems that had already been fixed internally in IBM, but the fixes could not be made public because it was outside of the chain of (marketing) command. In one case, IBM had been dinkin' around with a problem for three months ("send a dump and a trace"), with no results. I mentioned this to a buddy at IBM (outside the support area). He made a phone call, and got a name. That got him another name. On the third call, he was talking to the programmer who wrote the code.
The problem was resolved instantly when the guru told him, "have Marketing read their f*ckin' configuration manual". What IBM Marketing proposed (and the techs signed off on) could not possibly work with the hardware sold us. The IBM branch office had to eat three months of software rental (about $15K) for the time they wasted.
The new hadware was installed in a week, and the software worked perfectly the first time I fired it up.

I got an email last week from Michelle at Camillus Cutlery. They were discontinuing a line of premium one-hand knives, and wanted to know if I was interested. I said "yes", so she scrounged all the back corners of the factory, and mailed them to me.
They arrived today. 24 knives, two sizes, three different finishes. The "Cuda" series listed for $135 and $175, depending on size. The Hobbit Hole got these for $35 and $37 each. Here are some samples, along with the 904S for comparison:

Tanto, drop point, and EMT blades, some black, some bead-blasted, and some polished. There are even three left-handed smaller knives. They all open buy pushing the button along the curving path, which rotates a plastic pivot. The blades lock with a liner lock, rather than the lockback of the 904S.
The larger knives can be considered "tactical folders", which means they're bigger than a pocket knife, and can do much the same job as a smaller sheath knife. This picture shows the difference in blade thickness.

These are top-quality knives, but when they're gone, they're gone. Unless we spot closeouts with other knife dealers. I'm thinking we may need a "Hobbit Hole mathom house" page to offer items like this. I doubt that we will spend the $6 to put our logo on them.
Anyway, that's all the news I can announce now. Even bigger stuff is percolating.

I especially like the #4 knife down in the top pic. Wow... that looks like a great knife.
Kudos to our Camillus friends. They've really come through time and time again.

I especially like the #4 knife down in the top pic. Wow... that looks like a great knife. We have five of those. I'm going to try and reserve those for medics and corpsmen.
And yes, Camillus support has been fantastic.

"Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam?" I'd like to hear that as a duet. And it sounds like it would make a great dance number! :~D

Luke climbed in bed with us at 4:00-ish. We gotta get him over that. Let's just say he kicks in his sleep and has...incredible aim.
Wife just gave up and went downstairs to do school work.

Wow, those look great! Super kudos to Camillus.
I haven't been able to do much work on the site lately due to a project at work keeping me busy, but I've been mulling it over a bit. I'm still not sold that the software change I was contemplating is the way to go. What I think I will do is change the homepage from blog to a static page (like the Who We Are or the Donate pages), where we can keep prominent all the info we want people to see when they arrive. Then link to the blog posts.

Hair kindof likes the blog home page, but a static blurb at the top would be good :~D
