Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

The indoors ones stay on the floor... at least, I've only ever seen them on the floor and along the baseboards.
The outdoors ones hang on the walls, the windows, anything they can hang on. Some of them change color to blend in with their background, too.

COOL!
I've only seen lizards that change color a few times in my lifetime.
I'm off to bed. I'm beat.
Nighty night everyone!

Hi Ruthie.
Yes, I saw the pictures. They reminded me of right before our son's bar mitzvah, which was right before Hurricane Andrew, there were a couple of those big green numbers in a tree, we were taking potshots at 'em with a BB gun.
I do also notice that the iquana population of So FL is increasing pretty rapidly, although I think the chilly winter trimmed them back some.
I like the geckos, in part for the cool sounds they make.

Geckos make sounds? What, like squishy noises when you step on 'em?

Hi, Sam.
I like the geckos, in part for the cool sounds they make.
I haven't noticed any of the ones here in Texas making any sounds....

"
The Gecko's call is remarkably loud and clear and can be heard from a long distance; its popular name is derived from its call. Each call consists of a preliminary cackle, then the sound tuk-kaa repeated deliberately and distinctly several times." I googled that up, it's a fair description. They are very loud. There are some around here that are over a foot long, they may be the ones with the loud voices. It spooked me the first time I heard it, couldn't see the lizard, didn't know what was making the noise. Once we came home and there was a big one on the wall on the side of the house, at about eye level. It growled at us when we approached it.

Huh, that is pretty cool! I will have to keep my ears open should I ever be in Geckoland again.

"Tokay gecko, Gekko geckoThis is the lizard for which geckos were named. It is one of the relatively few lizards that vocalizes, and its mating call has variously been described as a loud gek-gek-gek-gekkkk or as tok-eh tok-eh. American soldiers in Vietnam notoriously heard the Tokay gecko's call as something else - to them, it sounded like F*ck you! The Tokay, an attractive but very aggressive species native to Southeast Asia, was in the past popular in the pet trade (apartment-dwellers in New York are sometimes advised by pet-shop owners to let Tokays run free to control cockroaches, though one might expect the vocalizations to be disconcerting!) and the species has naturalized in southern Florida and Hawaii." That's pretty cool! The geckos I've seen here are fairly small, maybe 5 or 6 inches from tip to tail at the largest. They probably aren't loud enough to be heard easily.

Ssshhh!!
Just ignore her and she'll go away.
I'm waiting for Tampa to disappear from the cone. Becky is really looking forward to Busch Gardens and I'd hate to back out now because of this stupid rain-n-blow.
