So...just exactly what is the appropriate response when your mother-in-law looks at you and says "My balls have holes in them." ????

She's obviously a bowler!

I own a Pathe cabinet phonograph which I inherited in my yout'. It works quite well with the RCA-style steel needles on the RCA-style records, but to play the Pathe records properly requires the sapphire ball stylus. Also, the reproducer head must be rotated to a different angle for the Pathe records, and the sapphire stylus must not be used on an RCA-style record.

Edison-style records are another whoe bucket o' beans.

In any case, congratulations on your find - enjoy those records! You inherited some Pathe records, too, I'm assuming?

Whoa, I didn't understand a word of that. Ancient tech, though, cool.

Yes, and some of them are pretty neat...the "demo" record that shipped with the phonograph, for one. Not knowing any better, I played a couple of them with the steel needles that I found in it, but the sound was unsatisfactory (because of the incorrect needle profile, as I later learned) and put them aside in favor of RCA-style records. I trust I did no serious damage to the pathe records, or if I did, that it was redundant, the same having been done by my late lamented ancestor, the former owner.

Thanks for the advice. They took the news well, thanked me, and said as long as I keep them informed, it's OK. They'd prefer to do it themselves, but if it's a choice between me and his peers, they'll pick me.

When we have the Moot on my ancestral estate (around 2018, I imagine) I'll do a big show'n'tell'n'play some neat old records.

Meanwhile, I still have to set up some sort of recording system and digitize this stuff :)

Maybe this month while Mom's in Finland (again) :o

I'm downloading a movie for my disaster relief organization...it's gonna take forever. Dial-up, you know.

Here's the link...if you have high speed, download it and tell me how it is!

I just put a high maximum bid on it. If I get outbid, meh...I'll survive. So far it's not even close.

I used to get fahklempt reading the Redwall novels to the Clare and Joseph. One of the 'good' characters died at the end of each book, and I always cried. It got to where Joseph could tell when I was gonna cry, and he'd get amused. Little twerp. ;o)

Have you ever looked into those books? They are very interesting, especially for boys. Lots of swashbuckling and clear good and evil.

I remember the TV adaptation of Green Gables, and when Matthew died, I cried, too.

No, I've never heard of them! Swashbuckling is what the boys love!

My swashbuckle broke.

Lost the swash.

Kept the buckle.
