The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I'm not sure how many are in line at the stadium. They've got 10 shelters set up. But there are people still down in the French Quarter.

I'm off. Got my last pool Board meeting.

I'm done a week from tomorrow.

I'll check in later. I have a feeling I'll be up late tonight...along with the rest of the country.

I can't believe they sent Shep into a hurricane.

I don't know that they *sent* him... apparently, from comments on the Live Thread, Shep is a big fan of sports teams there (LSU, N.O. Saints) and visits the city 10-15 times a year. He may have insisted on going.

He may have, I don't doubt he'd want to go (I'd like to go, actually), but I think he's a dork. ;~D

Indeed. (just catching up here) He better make sure his mascara is waterproof. ;)

Where's Geraldo???? He's the one they usually send to the front lines.

I'd say 100k is a very low estimate of folks left.

He's noticably shaken.

He oughta be. This time tomorrow, the Royal Sonesta might possibly be sitting with the first floor or two in the water.

We just saw MIL and FIL off after a nice Sunday dinner at our place. Earlier today, we took MIL to IKEA on a mercy mission.

She has out-of-town friends coming to stay with them next week and she's trying to get her condo fixed up. She has a good eye for decorating but insists that others do the handy-man part of it. The latest issue has been a set of bracket shelves she wants installed in the spare bedroom. All that is required are six screws drilled into the drywall.

She has appealed to her grandkids and her grandkids' friends to put up the shelves, but the grandkids are busy with school and such. She has called on her son in VA to put up the shelves, but he doesn't venture up this way very often. She has called on neighbors - no luck. Meanwhile, Big'ol has offered to put the shelves up; I had volunteered, too. Not good enough.

Finally, the friendly neighborhood condo handy-man installed the shelves. He missed the studs, used the wrong anchors for the drywall, and drilled the holes too large for the anchors. So when she started loading the bracket shelves with trinkets and *encyclopedias*, the whole kit-and-kaboodle comes crashing down. Stuff gets broken and she's fuming mad. Interestingly, she was fuming mad at *us*. We offered to help, but she turned us down.

Now, the out-of-town friends are very fancy and elegant. The shelves were utilitarian and, er, utilitarian. So I say to MIL, "How about a bookcase?" A bookcase can hold all the books she wants to display and all the trinkets and the dog toys and it won't fall off the wall. "Where can we get a bookcase?" she asks....

And that's where we hauled her to IKEA! MUAHAHAAAAA! Thank heavens for IKEA. Found her a nice, inexpensive bookcase, brought it back to the condo, assembled it in 20 min and voila! It even covers the screw holes in the drywall. ;) I don't quite know who out-maneuvered whom, but she's enchanted by her nice bookcase and the whole family is relieved to have the shelf matter put to rest.

I need a weekend to recover from my weekend.

I haven't had a chance to watch any of it. Made another 2 qts of 'mater sauce, have done all the laundry, vacuumed, etc trying to get ready for a week in NM. That goodness for FR - I would have been the last to know otherwise. LOL

Hmmm...."Days of Thunder" is on. Watching Tom Cruise get knocked into the wall might be good for a few laughs.

Or maybe I should put Gilligan on for a little bit.

Go fer Gilligan. We've been watching old Bewitched episodes lately. They're priceless.

Oh great. It's the episode where the cyclone is headed for the island and Gilligan's tooth becomes a radio receiver.

but I think he's a dork.

Ehh, anyone who can cause the f-bomb to be broadcast on live national TV in the midst of a slow-motion national crisis is OK in my book.
