I was out with friends last night. Everyone at the table was late 30's, early 40's. I was the oldest at 43.
We ordered drinks and the waitress asked for my ID. She was very embarassed when she saw my 1962 birthday.
But I have been a good mood since.
At what age were you last asked for ID when purchasing liquor?
It made my year, I was in a well lit drug store buying beer.
My mom's oldest brother has been able to get a senior discount for the last 20 years, even though his hair went gray at age 38. Not once has any store or restaurant asked for his ID, they just looked at his silvery gray hair and assumed he was a senior citizen.
Seriously I was carded at age 50. I have taken meticulous care of my skin. Never have smoked and have stayed out of the sun.
I don't think that I've ever been carded. At 16, I was always the one sent out to buy the beer.
When I was twenty-one (almost forty years ago) my aunt asked me to pick up some cigarettes for her at the store. They carded me (even then, you had to be eighteen). My reply was "If I have to get out my ID, I'm going back to get some beer and make it worth the effort."
Throughout my thirties and forties, I was always mistaken for someone ten to fifteen years younger. Now, my almost totally grey hair gives away my true age.
Reg45, I know what you mean. Just the other day I went into a supermarket to see my "adopted" daughter ( I kept both of her kids when they were little, they're now 17 and 21), but I digress.........anyhoo, it's been awhile since I saw her and she immediately asked me if I streaked my hair and I told her no, I didn't do it, Mother Nature did it for me. We both had a good laugh. I love that cigarettes and beer story...that's a hoot! Quick thinking on your part! Well, life goes on and my only regret was not appreciating my youth when I had it. I look back now and all the faults I thought I had (physically) weren't that bad after all. *~*
I worked for a few months at a convenience store(worst job I ever had), and my experience was that the only people who usually got upset about getting carded for booze or smokes were the ones who were underage.
I'm 35 and I still get carded occasionally. I always thank the clerk or waitress loudly and sincerely and tell them they'll never hurt my feelings by asking to see my ID for a beer. I don't know why the seller should be embarrassed, or the buyer should ever get upset if they're old enough(although I've seen a few jerks who do get bent out of shape), and the older, the better! ;)
It's not just the restaurants that get fined, the servers and bartenders can face fines and/or jail time. I personally would rather look at someone's ID and take a few minutes of grief than spend a night(or more) in jail. Besides, I find it can work in my favor...nobody tips better than a fortysomething woman who has just been carded!
A couple weeks ago. I'm 45, with a greying mustache fer pete's sake! I told the clerk, I've got hats old enough to drink.
I'm in my 50's and I insist they card me. Especially after receiving unsolicited mail offering me a deal on pre-pay funeral arrangements.
