You told me about your stepdaughter before, that shows how close you were.

I'm sure you were a great dad honey.

Yes.
She was a good kid, I was proud of her.
When that happened, it was as if the 'life' drained from my existence.
She was funny, smart, and could always cheer anyone up.

I get premonitions concerning people I'm close to; it freaks me out when they come true. I dislike it intensely, as the premonitions are never good news.

Yeah, I can't hardly imagine what that would be like.

My daughter turns 17 this weekend...

My condolences for your loss of your brother.
19 is young, with so much ahead in life.

I can smile about the good times now, the laughter and the pranks, but Sunday I was a mess.
Heck, in the sketch "My December", if you look at the figures hand you'll notice a star shaped pendant on a choker necklace.

I purposefully stuck that in there, as it was my step-daughters necklace.
It was handed to me after the accident from her personal effects.

So, in a way, she is always included in some manner in what I do.

ty darks.

I already told you the other day, you're a very kind soul; I'm sure that your step-daughter, if she knew, would be touched by remembering her that way.

I did my best, but all I could truly be was an ear to listen and a shoulder for her to cry on.

Sometimes that is all that can be done, and nothing is more frustrating than sitting by powerless over something and all you can do is sit there quietly.

That was a hard lesson for me to learn, that sometimes all one can do for their child is sit by and be a shoulder to cry on and an ear to hear.

Not sure I did truly learn it.

But I did my best.

I hope I never truly get premonitions.
Even if I already have.
I'd rather not know, if knowing means knowing something and not being able to change it.

Sometimes that is exactly the right thing.

It's hard.

That's not just for a child....significant others and friends, too, need someone who'll listen...that doesn't mean the person listening must "fix" anything to be helping....just listening may often help the person figure out how to fix it themselves.

knowing means knowing something and not being able to change it.

No, you can't change it...but, it allows you to say goodbye before they're gone....something you may have otherwise not done until it was a day too late.

It is difficult to describe.
I wasn't what some would term a 'real' parent, but the pain is real.
There is no way to truly describe it.

17?
May her years be blessed with sunshine and happiness, may her years be full of new knowledge and pleasant experiences, may she be a source of joy and pride, and a blessing to you.
(PS, Hopefully the Big Gy upstairs thinks such a blessing is a good idea..)

I'm especially bad at it.

Don't tell an engineer a problem, unless you want him to fix it!
