Help For My Dog

Posted on 08/06/2005 4:23:59 AM PDT by pepperdog

Took my poor little Maltese to have her teeth cleaned yesterday. She has had a horrible hacking cough that contorts her whole body ever since I brought her home, kind of like she is try to expell something. Called the vet, he said not to worry. At one this morning called an emergency vet, he said not to worry. We've been up all night with her all night and it's no better. She is able to drink a little water, very little, has had no food since day before yesterday. I am very concerned as well as very tired. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can help her?

Found this on taping from this site.

Hello, I currently have a 11 month old Dane his name is buddy, I purchased him from a breeder in Lakeland, Fl. @ 4 ½ months old, he is black w/ a white chest . After purchasing him I went to a local vet here in Brandon and spoke to them about getting his ears cropped, the vet explained to me that if I wanted to do the procedure we needed to act right away because if he gets much bigger it can not be done. So the decision was made to crop the ears, this was 2 days before thanksgiving 2004. We were very adamant about retaping, we were at the vet every other week until about Feb. Then I went to a local medical store and purchased all of the necessary stuff to maintain his ears myself, as I was informed that they may have to be taped thru his 7th month, then the ears would stand when he was out of the teething stage. Well, his right ear is absolutely beautiful however, the left ear lays on the top of his head. What can I do? A friend told us that sometimes you can have a plastic piece placed in the ear to make it stand however, I am unsuccessful in finding a vet to do this. I am willing to drive anywhere in the state of Florida does anyone have any ideas? Buddy is absolutely too beautiful to leave this alone he weighs approx 174lbs now and is the biggest baby.

What is the longest time you have had to tape?" Just curious list. I would like to hear from other folks the longest time they have had to tape their danes until ears stood. I will start Kane-harlequin male-4.5 months Justice-mantel-female-16 months Poison-harlequin-male-still taping at 7 months

Also just FYI, we did our dobie and did not tape them together as they kept coming apart. They flopped like all get out, but when the tape was FINALLY removed they stood up perfectly.

So sorry you having such a bad time with your dog. I have had my dogs (many dogs) teeth cleaned many times and never had this trouble. Uncleaned teeth allow bacteria into the system which weakens the kidneys and shortens the dogs life. Most dogs die of kidney failure if they live to old age, so you are kind of damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Works the same for people. However, if your immune system isn't compromised, you may be OK. My husband had rheumatic fever when he was young, and they told him to go on antibiotics before and after any kind of dental work.

We have a dog named Pepper. Is that where your name came from? Please let me know how your dog does.

Update on Maggie. Up with her last night at 2am and 4am, continuous coughing and just a miserable pup.Today we took her to the vet at 7:30 am, 3pm and 9pm. Each time she got an antibiotic shot. Tomorrow morning we are to take her in at 8am for another shot and a blood test. Still can't get an answer on what is wrong, but she is still coughing and gagging. It is really wearing on all of us and very sad to watch her. Overall I would have to say she is somewhat improved, but certainly far from well. Hope for better info and much improvement tomorrow. Thanks for your continued support and concern, it really helps. Pepperdog

If I remember correctly, Tuscaloosa Goldfinch is our FReeper veterinarian. If I'm wrong, please accept my apologies.

Nope, not me!! LOL

I think vetvetdoug is our Freeper Vet. :-)

Hope your dog is better soon!

On another note, someone dropped a puppy INTO my mother's back yard day before yesterday. "THEY" have done this before but putting one over the fence is a new low, they just usually drive by and drop them off. I brought the puppy over here to try to find it a home -- it's a tiny black female with a wiry coat, one white foot, one white chin, and tons of fleas. :-( Gave her a bath this afternoon, will worm her tomorrow. My daughter bought the smallest collar we can find, and taken up all the way it still hangs away from her neck.

She does know how to eat, though, we had steak tonight and she knows what to do with a steak scrap LOL

The golden retrievers here are rather puzzled by this 20 ounce wonder.

Took Maggie to the vet this morning at 8am after a pretty good night, only up once with her and just for a short time at 2am. The vet said she was improved and didn't give her a shot as I thought he would. He put her on antibiotics, pill form and another cough pill. He said she would continue to cough for a "long time, until she heals", and to bring her back on Friday. He didn't say it was something that happened during the teeth cleaning, but I know it was.

I now know not to ever have my dog's teeth cleaned (thanks to all the freepers who told me about the dangers)and I also know that if I have doggy questions this board is a wonderful source of information and it is where I'll come first. This is my final report on Maggie, unless she declines--then I'll be back to ask your advice and opinions again. Thanks again for your support during this stressful time. This is a great community.PD

Wonderful news! I'm so glad she's doing better. You might want to try some doggie toothpaste and a brush and just brush her teeth. I haven't had a whole lot of success with that, but I know a lot of people have. Thanks for the update.

Glad to hear she is a little better . Did you ever get an xray to make sure she doesn't have anything in her throat or lungs??
