Took my poor little Maltese to have her teeth cleaned yesterday. She has had a horrible hacking cough that contorts her whole body ever since I brought her home, kind of like she is try to expell something. Called the vet, he said not to worry. At one this morning called an emergency vet, he said not to worry. We've been up all night with her all night and it's no better. She is able to drink a little water, very little, has had no food since day before yesterday. I am very concerned as well as very tired. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can help her?
Take her to emergency care. She may have something lodged in her throat from the cleaning. Better safe than sorry. If she is drinking or eating she is trying to tell you something. Good luck!
I would take her to another vet asap if the coughing started after her teeth got cleaned. If she has something lodged in her throat she will only get worse.
PS we have a 3/4 maltese/yorkie mix. Maltese are worth their weight in gold.
Definitely take her into a vet ASAP. If something is stuck in her throat, it could cause swelling and cut off her air. Let us know how she is and what the vet says.
If I remember correctly, Tuscaloosa Goldfinch is our FReeper veterinarian. If I'm wrong, please accept my apologies.
Take her to a vet. Insist that you think there's something caught in her throat. Make them take an x-ray if necessary.
You know your dog better than they do.
Maybe picked up kennel cough from a sick dog at the vet's office?
Your vet is correct. We have several dogs, and they usually have this symptom after a teeth cleaning procedure. You can spray some sore throat spray in her mouth to ease the dryness. Sometimes our dogs will have this sort of cough for several days.
Just a suggestion, not a vet, don't play one on the Internet -- We had a similar encounter at a dentist, in our case it was the anesthesia that caused our dogs problem. I would find out what the dentist used, if he used any, if they did anesthetize the dog, seek help at an emergency pet clinic NOW. The problem is serious, our dog died several days after the teeth cleaning, they said it was from the anesthesia and an allergic reaction. We found out afterward that severe allergic reaction is pretty common.
Possibly aspiration pneumonia. Happened to my friend's dog years ago. Get her to the emergency room fast.
Act now.
I've got an 8 month old (beautiful, blue) dane. Ears were cropped. One ear simply will not stand. I don't want to give up on the taping yet, but I also don't want to keep taping the other ear since it isn't necessary.
Anyone know of a one ear technique? That is, something without a bridge between the ears to keep them standing?

In the case of a sick doggie, you can't be too careful. We waited 12 days while the vet misdiagnosed our Jack Russell's bowel obstruction. She lost 4 lbs (only 11 to start with). After waking in the middle of the night and thinking she had passed, I rushed her to an emergency vet who immediately took an xray. They found a piece of tennis ball the size of a quarter. They did surgery right away and Lincoln is fine now.
You'll feel better with the results of an xray and will learn something either way.
Please give us an update.
Thank you, thank you, everyone! I just got back from the emergency vet. He gave her a shot to stop the swelling in her throat, an antibiotic shot and a shot for dehydration. Also some cough pills. She is a little sleepy now, he said this would happen, but coughs only every once in a while. I think taking her to the emergency vet was the right (if expensive) thing to do and I thank you all again for your advice. I'll keep you posted on how she's doing. I've only had her a month, her previous owner died and I got her from the granddaughter, don't know much about her but love her a lot.
Did they knock your dog out? Probably. Sometimes the NG tube will cause irritation and a dry cough. The dog may be having trouble shaking off the effects of the anesthesia, too.
I would also take seriously the possibility that the dog has aspirated some fluids -- especially if the coughing sounds 'wet'. Pneumonia can kill quickly.
Lastly, take you dog to the vet.
take her to emergency care and have them exray her.
i am so glad to hear that your dog is well! thank goodness you went and got help. sounds like in just a bit of time too.
