Where are you retiring and why?

Posted on 08/02/2005 2:29:28 PM PDT by Die_Hard Conservative Lady

Okay, this is my first vanity post, so let's just have some fun with it.... Where are you going to move when you retire, and why, is what this post is all about, I'm retiring in less than a year, and my husband and I are moving to the Ozarks and build a house on a lake.

We just got back from Couer D'Alene after signing the papers and getting the keys to our new house this weekend. We've been working on buying up there for almost 4 years...we will be moving up there soon and be semi retired once our property in Los Angeles sells and I can quit working full...(full time anyway)

However it's become apparent that Couer D'Alene's changed quite a bit since we first started going up there. Too many of the wrong kind of people are leaving California (and elsewhere) and heading up there...We're already starting to think about another place to retire to. Maybe Montana...

Do NOT move to Texas when you retire. We have no income tax so it's great when you're working but we pay for everything from property taxes so it's hell with a fixed income.

The Republic of Georgia, probably just outside of Tbilisi.

Mediterranean climate, terrific food, and the dollar goes forever. 95% Christian population, primarily Orthodox Christian, which is our faith.

The kindest and most loving people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. They love Americans and welcome them with open arms.

I retired years ago. Staying in Cook County, Illinois so that when the inevitable happens, I can still stay active in politics.

According to Sir Benny Hill, scientists have discovered why elephants go to a central graveyard to die...it's the walk that kills them!

I can't help but notice that no one mentioned Boston.

If I recall, isn't Fredricksburg the home town of Lady Bird Johnson, a.k.a. Claudia Taylor? Wasn't her daddy the richest man in that town?

Don't know either, but Chester Nimitz has a boyhood home there. Hill Country Texas.

Appreciate the advise good buddy, but my heart has yearned for home a long time. I'm a native originally from Austin (family still there) and am familiar with the rising taxes in our Republic. But I figure for what I'll get for my Calif. property, I'll be able to own our retirement home outright. Still, I've got easily 15yrs. to decide . . .

As a Missouri native, I have vacationed often in the Missouri and Arkansas Ozark region.

The various retirement communities along the line between the two states have grown tremdously after a slow start in the 70s.

Golf courses, nearby lakes, some of the fairly large and an easy standard of living with little snow.

You do get some ice in the winter and the occasional big storm but otherwise the biggest adjustment will be the July and August humidity and dealing with the bugs.

Wasps, chiggers and the like will take getting used to on the level that exist in the Ozarks compared to your current region.

Spring and fall are "drop dead" beautiful and there is plenty to explore within a four hour drive.

Already retired to a life RV'ing. Home base is Alabama, (had to be in the South somewhere, and our son goes to Auburn). Winter in Texas or someplace warm. (good two stepping, close to S. Padre, Mexico, lots of resorts for RVs there) Summer in California (and don't tell them we are there) along the northern coast. Need to find other summer spots, like the New England area, but have not had the time yet.

Naw...... it was Karnack, Texas and her daddy owned the general store and declared himself as the 'dealer in everything'.... Karnack is in Northeast Texas not too far from the Tx/La line and Caddo Lake. Northeast of Marshall, Tx and Northwest of Shreveport, La.

IIRC, last time I was there was '97.

Didn't care for the place at all.
Stayed in Belize city & visited Placentia.

YUCK !

Most tourists go to Ambergris Cay but I had no intentions of mingling w/ tourists.

Not a paradise. A cliquish, poverty stricken hell hole w/ tremendous crime (theft) IMHO

We are considering Couer D'Alene, Idaho as well. Or possibly somewhere in Washington. Not sure about the winters there though. We've lived out our lives in San Diego and are not used to harsh winters at all. Still, I want somewhere green and semi-rural. I really like Idaho.

We were up there last June looking around. We liked it but I know what you mean.. I picked up a local newspaper and read stories about the local meth problems.

How depressing. That's just the sort of thing I want to get away from when I retire....

10 more years.... /sigh
