In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

smarmy \SMAR-mee\ adjective
1. revealing or marked by a smug, ingratiating, or false earnestness *
2. of low sleazy taste or quality

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:
"I was so disappointed to hear you didn't get that promotion," said Kit, using a smarmy tone of voice that made me fume.

Did you know?
Something "smarmy" will often ooze with self-satisfaction and insincerity. Much like its synonyms "unctuous" and "slick," "smarmy" has a history that starts with a meaning of literal slipperiness or oiliness. The verb "smarm" appeared in English in the mid-19th century. Etymologists don't know where it came from, but they do know that it meant "to smear," "to gush," or sometimes "to make smooth or oily." A few decades later, use of "smarm" was extended to sometimes mean "to use flattery." The adjective "smarmy" appeared in the early 20th century. At first meaning "insincerely flattering" or "smug," it later took on an additional meaning: "sleazy."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Smarminess Personified.

Bush's pick of a Catholic Harvard Grad who won Senate confirmation unanimously two years ago- just makes me want to DANCE!!!

And a rare woo-hoo to Orrin Hatch for the Quote of the day:
"Some [of Schumer’s questions] I totally disagree with," Hatch of Utah said. "Some I think are dumbass questions...

Yesterday was crazy day, didn't get a posting done. Forgive me!

Today is almost as crazy, but I love the word of the day!

An alliterative indulgence to celebrate my yesterday anniversary to my sweet husband:

The smarmy swarm of media mighties
seethes loudly and summons in smegmatic sermons,
psychotic screaming slicing into soundbites:
John G. Roberts Jr. reputating juicily
that which they desire, disruption of their dreams,
a slap in the face of the meaningless farce
they call blue values. Blungeoned, they bellow,
be-Bushed and bewildered.

I love the little saddle ox and mary janes. I am just imagining these antics while Bush was speaking, because the kids had been removed by the time the introduction was over, and it doesn't look like a photo op.

Soap is what the people complaining about Roberts because of his conservativism need to wash their mouths out with...Mentally, one might say they are filled with the stuff of the first thought that popped into your mind, in a metaphoric way, of course....yucky is as yucky does....

Okay. I know that I have too much time on my hands when I watch this video and the one that inspired it uninterrupted at work--twice.

It may just be me-- but I prefer the Brits version, something about exposing so very much of that pasty white skin to the desert sun. Neither the Dutch nor the Brits have any rhythm, and I know the US production that is bound to come out will have even bigger and better port-a-potty choreography.

It really is more complex than it looks because it is all one continuous shot and all of the "actors" have to wait in place for the recording crew and lead dancer to come by and join the dance. I read on a British web sight that the original was one of the best recruitment tools ever!

I have video of my kids vacuuming the dog, while he permits it with a pained and humiliated expression on his face...

From the Arizona Republic online, a smarmy letter complaining about a morning flyover of F-16s prompted a classy reply from a Luke AFB Colonel, followed by a contrite and humble apology from the original author:

The complaint:

Quote: A wake-up call from Luke's jets

Jun. 23, 2005 12:00 AM

"Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: Whom do we thank for the morning air show?

Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 a.m., a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune!

Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns' early-bird special?

Any response would be appreciated."

Be careful what you ask for. Here is the response:

Quote: Regarding "A wake-up call from Luke's jets" (Letters, Thursday):

On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt Jeremy Fresques.

Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.

At 9 a.m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend.

Based on the letter writer's recount of the flyby, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the president of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured.

A four-ship flyby is a display of respect the Air Force pays to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.

The letter writer asks, "Whom do we thank for the morning air show?"

The 56th Fighter Wing will call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

Lt. Col. Scott Pleus
CO 63rd Fighter Squadron
Luke Air Force Base

Well, to his credit, after seeing the reponse, the author realized the error of his ways and wrote a heartfelt apology:

Regarding "Flyby honoring fallen comrade" (Letters, June 28):

I read with increasing embarrassment and humility the response to my unfortunate letter to The Republic concerning an Air Force flyby ("A wake-up call from Luke's jets," Letters, June 23).

I had no idea of the significance of the flyby, and would never have insulted such a fine and respectful display had I known.

I have received many calls from the fine airmen who are serving or have served at Luke, and I have attempted to explain my side and apologized for any discomfort my letter has caused.

This was simply an uninformed citizen complaining about noise.

I have been made aware in both written and verbal communications of the four-ship flyby, and my heart goes out to each and every lost serviceman and woman in this war in which we are engaged.

I have been called un-American by an unknown caller and I feel that I must address that. I served in the U.S. Navy and am a Vietnam veteran. I love my country and respect the jobs that the service organizations are doing.

Please accept my heartfelt apologies.
