In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

smarmy \SMAR-mee\ adjective
1. revealing or marked by a smug, ingratiating, or false earnestness *
2. of low sleazy taste or quality

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:
"I was so disappointed to hear you didn't get that promotion," said Kit, using a smarmy tone of voice that made me fume.

Did you know?
Something "smarmy" will often ooze with self-satisfaction and insincerity. Much like its synonyms "unctuous" and "slick," "smarmy" has a history that starts with a meaning of literal slipperiness or oiliness. The verb "smarm" appeared in English in the mid-19th century. Etymologists don't know where it came from, but they do know that it meant "to smear," "to gush," or sometimes "to make smooth or oily." A few decades later, use of "smarm" was extended to sometimes mean "to use flattery." The adjective "smarmy" appeared in the early 20th century. At first meaning "insincerely flattering" or "smug," it later took on an additional meaning: "sleazy."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

We had to wear beanies when we were Freshmen in high school. It was a tradition. They don't do it any longer.

I wore an apron with a word that was supposed to be my name that translated to "Cabbage Head." I also had a case of Taiwan fever that caused my chestnut curls to fall out in patches...like mange. It grew in again - black. My mom kept me in a pixie cut for years...I looked like a young Mr. Spock.

I HATED pixie cuts(no Mom, they're not adorable), later rebelled and grew mine to the waist in HS and college.

You think the pixie cut was bad, I had the perm to look like a flipping poodle. My hair was just wavy then, so it needed more curl. Now it's a curly as when I had the perm. Thank goodness for hair straightening irons, although it's all curly today.

they told me (they = nineteen year old influencing fourteen year old) that it means "I'll kill you" - or "I'll roll you."

Since practically everything they say is learned from anime, I think it's the equivalent of Marvin the Martion saying: "OHHH, that makes me very angry!"

Could be - truth to tell, I haven't had a conversation in Japenese since 1972. So I have no idea. Use it or lose it, you know?
