In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

smarmy \SMAR-mee\ adjective
1. revealing or marked by a smug, ingratiating, or false earnestness *
2. of low sleazy taste or quality

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:
"I was so disappointed to hear you didn't get that promotion," said Kit, using a smarmy tone of voice that made me fume.

Did you know?
Something "smarmy" will often ooze with self-satisfaction and insincerity. Much like its synonyms "unctuous" and "slick," "smarmy" has a history that starts with a meaning of literal slipperiness or oiliness. The verb "smarm" appeared in English in the mid-19th century. Etymologists don't know where it came from, but they do know that it meant "to smear," "to gush," or sometimes "to make smooth or oily." A few decades later, use of "smarm" was extended to sometimes mean "to use flattery." The adjective "smarmy" appeared in the early 20th century. At first meaning "insincerely flattering" or "smug," it later took on an additional meaning: "sleazy."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.

I wouldn't mind being pelted with a fillet about now.

The verb "to be" is intransitive, it never takes an object, therefore the correct form is the nominative (I think that's what we called it in Latin). "It is I" is correct. "It is me" is incorrect, but it's what everybody says, and the world won't come to an end if we're all wrong. Or so I've been made to believe.

THere's even a play and a musical about it: Jack and his coat of many coolers.

It gets right to the meet of the seally matter.

high-fillet-lootin' morays

I think you're right, they are eels who steal fillets.

Is this Friday, or are we all just tired from last night?

I get to run some errands right now. It's a mere 107 outside right now. Better than 117 as it was last week.

If you seal meet very tightly, it can't smell very much.

(On the otter hand, it has a hard time swimming inside the bag.)

I am preparing for a girls night out to go see Michael Buble. I can't decide between dressing up (for a change) or dressing comfortably.

I have a gorgeous green, gold and turquoise oriental print silk suit that does not need a blouse, but does need heels (strappy killer heels that make my legs look great, but I may have to actually walk two blocks from the parking garage.)- or I have a more modest beige and navy linen sleeveless dress with a short sleeved jacket that I can wear with alligator sandals and no hose. It's blistering hot here in Jax today, but the theater is on the river and highly air conditioned.

Cleavage vs. comfort, the eternal struggle. Any input?
