The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Old square balers are inexpensive but will need lots of work to keep them repaired and adjusted correctly. Keep the kiddies and pets away from the baler when it is operating though. They could lose fingers, toes or much worse....... : (

Keeping something like that running is right up Deaconjims street. He is an industrial mechanic and that is his job! : )
As for our kids, we will tell them, but they wont touch.
They are really good about stuff like that and dont meddle where they are not supposed too. We've built two houses in 3 years and there is a lot of equip tools that are dangerous that they never touched or went near. Tommy was a baby when we began as well!
I know I am blessed with the children, I see so many kids unruly and getting into everything. If ours are curious or want to see something, they ask. I guess that is why the older generations especially in our family and friends have really praised our children. : )
I am strict and expect respect at all times, but saying that, I also read to my children, and take time with them. They seem very happy! : )

I have a blanket to keep us warm and cozy....... : )

Great, you will not have any problems then. I have seen old self powered hay balers being pulled by a team of mules. Amazing to see but it works.

You are welcome but I have to be honest and admit that I do not have a horse and buggy.

The thought is nice though..... : )

I remembered:) I've got a few good pictures of the sponge test:) He really didn't like it at first. I bounced it around him before we left and he seemed fine. So I wasn't expecting his reaction when we were in the creek. He did get use to it. I tired the first time in a shallow creek. I guess in the shallower one there was more swinging of the sponge. We landed up out of the creek (got a picture of that, it's loading). It was kind of funny the way he cocked his head to watch it floating in the water.

When we got to the deeper water, he sniffed it floating around (I didn't get pictures of that). He got use to me reeling it up after a few times. I think at the ride I'll not leave it hooked to the saddle when I'm lowering it, that way if he really gets upset I can just drop it. The problem in the shallow water today, When he went to try to get away it followed because I had it hooked to my saddle. He wasn't bad, he just didn't like it.

He was actually just cocking his head to keep an eye on that spooky thing floating in the water, then swinging thru the air:) It was really pretty comical to watch him watch the sponge. Maybe he doesn't like purple:)

HEHEHEH.... I know that ~look~ in those first pics! "If that thing touches me, I'm outa here!"

Perhaps in the next few days, rub him down with that sponge alot, WET, so he recognizes it and expects it to be cool and wet when he sees it.

LOL...that's exactly what he was thinking and did:). I couldn't figure do I drop it and get hold of the reins with both hands, or keep reeling it with one hand and try NOT to get knocked off with the tree branch. I really don't remember what I finally did, Any way it was alot of fun. When we got to the deeper water it was easier because he couldn't move so fast, and there was as much to reel in. I unhooked if from my saddle to just in case:).

Course if I ever have to drop it unattached, that will mean leaving it or going in after it:)

Well, the good part is... you rode your new saddle through a spook and stayed in your seat.... Did you feel secure?

Oh, yeah, very secure. He also jumped a branch across a trail today too, and I stayed right with him. I'm really likeing it alot. And liking this horse more and more. We were trotting with Celia in the front and I asked him to come down to a walk while she went on and he was fine. Walked on a loose rein, even tho she went out of sight.

I think I've finally got a good one:)
