The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Thanks Calpernia, I'll check it out. I'm actually watching two cats of a person who relocated here because of the storm.

I'm not gonna have to get a new vacuum after all. My husband took the old one apart and found a clogged filter that we didn't even know was in there. Works like brand new!

Oh that pony is out banging on the gate before I even have my coffee made. I wish I had a water cannon I could nail her with...

Good morning :~D

Jenny was here last night and we watched the movie PharLap. You ever see that? I saw it years ago, but it was a good movie and we enjoyed seeing it again last night. Kind of seemed the same story as SeaBiscut. I love race movies and the music that plays when the horse starts coming up from behind.

LOL, again:)

I hate walking past my front windows in the morning, because the horses are all standing at the ends of their runs staring at the house:) My first cup of coffee is always drunk with a guilt feeling because I know they are out there waiting, waiting, waiting:)

We watched it too, but we missed the beginning, started halfway through... so we didn't quite get who was going after the horse!

And at the end they never said who poisoned the horse.

I also didn't quite get that the foot blew up on that last race, but they just bandaged it and he was gonna race again a couple weeks later. Not that I don't believe that would happen, but I wondered who I was supposed to think was the hero of the story, except the horse.

I'd never seen the movie before, and never read that book, so we were a little lost.

They can see me when I'm here at the computer. It's right by the front window.

The dark headed guy, Dave with the wife owned the horse. The old cranky guy was his trainer who recommeded he buy the horse. When Dave first saw hiim he didn't like him and wanted to sell, I think he was just a yearling. The trainer talked him into letting him lease the horse for 3 years and he would give him 1/3 of the winnings. At first the horse was very lazy and wouldn't run. But the strapper, Tom Burlison, figured out what it took to make him run. Burlison and the horse bonded.

I think they knew that they were risking his foot, but everyone concerned with the exception of Burlison was just in it for the money and he worked for them.

I beleive it still is a mystery exactly what happened at the end to the horse. It could have just been a normal colic, or he could have been poisoned. The horse was just so good no one wanted to run against him, and no one was making money, as they all said he was a freak:). Money was the driving force.

I really don't know that there was a "hero". Just a good story with a mystery at the end.

Oh, and just a point of interest, since you missed the beginning. How he got his name . The horse was so slow at the beginning some report sarcastically said they should name him Lightening. The cranky trainer asked how you spell lightening in some language, I didn't catch it. He was told Farlap. The trainer said that would work because the last 7 Melbourne winners had 7 letters in their names. So the reporter respelled the name Pharlap, and the trainer named him that.

Huh.... well, I didn't guess that he was the culprit that was after the horse.

I guess I should watch it from the beginning sometime :~D

I'm sorry did you get the impression I was saying Burlison was the culprit. He wasn't. He really loved the horse and didn't want to run him with that foot. If he was poisoned it would have been the people in charge of the racing. The guys like the handicappers back in Australia.

Sorry I'm not good at explaining:)

I don't know if they have enough range... I need to reach the gate from the front door... its about 50-60 yards. I can't reach her with the nozzle on the hose, she runs out of range and laughs at me.

A paintball gun would be good - if messy. Do they have paintballs that are just full of water? :~D
