The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It's strange how different horses gray at such different rates. Grace is being very slow about it. At the moment, she looks like a black roan and she's 2yrs old so she might be close to 10 before she completely grays out. I just found a website for the farm that was standing her grandsire and was just floored by his looks. It's funny coz he's dead now, but they still have him on their website with a $750 stud fee and live foal guarantee. That's pretty impressive for a dead horse! ;o) Here's the site if you want to check it out. http://bridlewood-farm.com/Bridlewood2002/Stallions/Ironworks/Ironworks.html

LOL! Actually they could have I guess. Don't they freeze semen these days? Or do they just chill it for shipment?

Has the lady and her daughter showed up to test drive Rocky?

I really don't know a thing about it.... I know some of the registries allow shipped semen, but not all of them do.

The whole deal with stallion management is just amazing to me. I was talking to a man at the horse camp last weekend who stands several stallions and he said that he liked to use AI because you can collect one specimen from the stallion, dilute it, and breed several mares from it. He said it was possible to breed a stallion so much that he would loose all interest in mares. I just couldn't believe it coz most stallions will just about breathe fire when a mare in season is around, but he said it had happened to some high-priced race horses he had heard about. I do know that the guy who owns the stallion that I breed my mares to had some problems with him this spring from breeding so many mares. He said it was jut taking him forever to "get 'er done" and the vet gave him some testosterone shots to give him about once a month. We laughed when he was telling me about the "horsey Viagra", but apparently it did the trick. He said he wouldn't want to do it very much though because it made him so full of himself that he was just about uncontrollable. I'm just glad that I don't have to deal with one. I'll leave that end of it so someone else.

I think all horses gorgeous in their own way, or have the potential to be with some groceries. I tend to like the paint brushed ones that are big butted, with long necks and close to the ground.

Yeah they came. The lady is now buying a horse for her daughter, and the daughter wants something faster then what Rusty is.

Well yes and no:)

If someone is looking for a horse to really ride hard,,,I'd rather it not be Rusty. His system is working fine now, but I don't know how it would handle alot of stress. I'd really like to just sell him to someone like her mother who just wants to trail ride a few times aweek. I'd feel bad sending him somewhere where the riding would cause his system to shut down again. I don't know that it would, but I would worry.

And I don't really mind if I have to keep him:) I've always really liked him. It's just in reality I don't need 3 riding horses.

Yeah, when the deal switched from the horse being for the mother to it being for the daughter, then it wasn't a good match anymore. I was just saying Darn because of that. I'm glad he didn't go to the girl either.

Yes, unless someone wants to pay good money to buy him, he will become one of our studs. His temperment is great so far anyway, and he will always throw color, no matter what he's bred to.

Well, he looks pretty good for a dead horse :) You can see the difference in his graying from one picture to the next. How old was he when he died?

I don't know. I didn't even know he was dead until my friend showed me this. I can't read the dates on it...
