This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Thanks.
Becky
Well as long as it doesn't hurt them, each to their own I guess:')
Here is hoping all goes well for you.
Good mornin Cindydawg! we are heading out soon to go look at trucks. We are considering trading my 2004 toyota sienna for a 4x4 crew cab truck.
Thanks:)
Becky
having to push again this morning, I wonder why?
I think it must have to do with the size of the thread.
Becky
I like trucks:')
Yep, they will, most of 'em anyways. I've got 3 left from last year. One of them that's in an old enamel bucket is several years old. I usually leave them in the pots they came in and come wintertime, I put them right up against the house on the south side, where they'll get sun all day and have the heat of the house radiating back out during the night. If you plant them in the garden, just cut the tops off and mulch them deep when it starts to freeze. As long as some of the the roots live, they'll put back out in the spring. Then, to make them very compact and bloom all at the same time in the fall like they did when you first got them, you cut them back almost to the ground in June.
Good morning!
I don't mind the picking apart, actually. It's the absolute ONLY way I'll learn what to look for and look out for when I do finally look for a horse.
Although, if I have any say in it (and if God decided to smile on me), I'll be in Washington when I am looking, so I'll just drag Hair and ecurbh around from place to place until she gives the thumbs-up!
LOL!!
OK, thanks for the info. The lady at Lowes told me to keep cutting the buds off till late June to make them bloom nicely. I didn't realize to cut them back all the way to the ground. I'm planning on mixing some annuals around them in the spring so I'll have some flowers in the summer in that spot then the mums will bloom in the fall. That's the plan anyway:)

Hair, that I guess is called "payback" time for all the "help" you give! Let us know if and when it happens and we'll all get some popcorn and watch! : D
RMDupree, good luck in your wish! : )
Well if it's cover you want, and fast, try Kudzu. It'll cover anything that isn't moving!
Just kidding! I wouldn't plant Kudzu on my worst enemy...well, maybe I would. ;o)
Getting help like that is the best way for a first time buyer to buy a horse:)
Most of the "picking apart" that goes on on this thread, is actually just opinions:), horse people are pretty full of them:), People showing me what to look for in a horse is how I learned to figure out what I liked in a horse. When I first started buying them, I couldn't even tell you why I liked one horse better then another, and I didn't realize how important confirmation was. I would get hung up alot on color. Color doesn't mean squat if a horse isn't put together well, but it's the hardest thing to get past:). Everyone has their favorite color, and tends to think all horses of that color are pretty:).
There's nothing wrong with liking the lighter built horses. They're just not MY favorite. But when you do go to buy, if you aren't in Washington, you need to know how to read ads, and IMO, the ad on this horses raises some red flags, that a first time buyer might not see. I'm not talking down to you, I'm speaking from a person who learned the hard way and it bothers me to see someone get screwed by double speak in an ad:) On the other hand the ad may be perfectly legit. You just have to know what to look for.
It might be an interesting/learning topic for all of us on this thread. Post some ads, and everyone give their opinion on what questions the ad raises in their minds about the horse.

I love columbines. In England I cut mine down a bit after the first flowering and then they flower again! After the second flowering time I let the flower heads go to seed and use that seed to keep my garden stocked. One day, I will have time to grow a flower garden again that is worth taking pics of! LOL Another shrub that I LOVE because it is so interesting year round, is Spirea Forest Flame. It has tiny white flowers, but the neat part is the new leaves which are bright red. : ) Needs NO maintantence to keep it beautiful year to year! I also love HEBEs has anyone got them here? I Used to a a fushia buch that was 30 years old and just beautiful. I have only seen hybred hanging container fushias here.......anyone got some shrub ones?
Thats a really good idea! I'm not in the market for a horse, but if I were I really wouldnt have much clue of what to look for other than what i think looks nice which is not the "seasoned" way to go about it! It would be a real help for anyone that is going to buy a horse in the future! Remind me not to post pics of my horses during this time though! LOL
I'll be the first to admit that I don't know squat about horses. :-D
When the day comes that I am ready to buy a horse, I definitely don't want to try it alone!! I've got "SUCKER" printed on my forehead at this point in my horse-education.
I am partial to buckskins/duns, make no mistake - but I'd rather have a cross-eyed nag with a wonderful disposition than a high-stepping, beautiful nightmare on wheels.
LOL!!
I'm probably an overly suspicious person, especially when I'm reading an ad on horses:). So my opinions my seem harsh.
I was never smart enough to get help when buying horses when I first started, I bought them because I thought they were Pretty. And pretty can kill you as fast, sometimes faster, then ugly:). Back before I got Belle we counted up the horses we had bought and sold, trying to find the right one, I think it was in the neighborhood of 30 horses. I do alot better now getting good horses:) But I'm still learning. I would not ever get another one now that had obviously not been taken care of well, like Rusty was. I had no clues the long term problems that could cause. I just thought feed him up and he'll be fine. Altho I believe his problems were not necessarily from bad nutrition as much as being left in the hot sun for long periods with no water.

Sharn, have you lost your mind?! Honeysuckle is almost as bad as Kudzu about taking the world over. It makes little black berries that the birds like to eat, then spread the seeds everywhere in their poop. You can't even walk through the woods around here because it's covered the ground and trees up. It smells wonderful, but that's not worth the trouble just for that.
