The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Does it really get that cold there? We can have cold snaps but low teens and 20's is very unusual and even if it does get that cold, it doesn't last longer than a day or 2 and it's back up to the 60's. I can only remember one really bad cold spell, it was 1989 or 90 and it killed everything, bushes, grass, winter hardy plants, etc. but that's the only year in recent memory that it got that cold. And it was COLD, single digits.

Why are you moving Beacause I miss having the four seasons! I LOVE snow, snuggling up in front of a warm fire, bonfires, that sharpness in the air.......I love rain! What I find hard to take YEAR round is Very HOT weather! It is VERY HUMID here......semi tropical. I want mountians, clear streams, no fire ants, and to be able to wear a flannel shirt! LOL : D

What are the going rate for rental homes in your area? My SIL's mom lives in the Tampa area. We are planning to go down at Christmas, but if I can swing an early retirement, I would like to stay a couple months. At least get out of here in January and February. You can PM me, if you do not want the world to know where you live. Thanks.

I despise fire ants!! We buy a big trailer load of fertilizer every spring and have fire ant killer mixed in. Enough for the pastures and the barn area and we don't have a fire ant problem. If we don't use it consistantly, though, the fire ants come back with a vengeance.

I'm in Miami and the prices here are ridiculous!!

Tampa and its surrounding areas is MUCH more affordable, although prices there have already started to creep up.

If we plan on staying for a couple of months, you can get some excellent deals in the Orlando area (Kissimmee, St. Cloud, Winter Park, etc).

The further south you go, the higher the prices.

Does it really get that cold there?...

Believe it or not, it does. It's usually in January or February. You're down around DFW aren't you? That's about even with Montgomery. I'm up in the NW corner of Alabama, about even with OKC. It's hard to believe that that small of a distance can make that big a difference in the temperature. Those really cold temps usually only last a couple of weeks and the sun usually warms everything up to above freezing during the day even then, but not always. The coldest I ever remember it being here was 5 below zero and that was at least 20 years ago. I was in college, and Dang, that's cold, I don't care where you're from. I don't see how people LIVE in Canada! Too cold for my wimpy-ass Southern blood! ;o)

Then come to New England! :-)We've got rain, we've got snow, we have winter spring summer and fall. We even have fish and chips! Great fish and chips! You want lobster? We have fresh lobster right off the boat. You want a coastline? We have a coastline. The only thing we have that you don't want are liberals! But they're a dime a dozen and great for target practice! :-p

I went with Jenny for her first prenatal doctor's appointment. We had to be there very early. I just had time to get up and get ready. it was so cool, we got to see the heart beating...

I wondered about that mare too, but she sure looked pregnant fat to me. But maybe not, I didn't ask, just assumed.

Yep, they're everywhere. You really gotta watch where you put your feet or you'll get a very unpleasant surprise.
