This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Here's the little terrerium it came in.
The tallest one is the trap that has the fly in it, you can see the short one is open. There are 2 more tiny ones that are in the growing stage.
Here is a good look at the open one.
Becky
I'll say!
That's pretty cool.... How often does it eat? :~D
I don't know. The directions doesn't even say how many flies to give it. I'll just see how quick the one that got a fly opens back up. The directions on growing it are not real clear. I don't know if I have to keep it in an enclosed thing like it came in, or if it can live outside of it. The one that the neighbors had that I remember as a kid, was bigger, more traps, and they just kept it in the window sill where it caught morning light in a regular pot. The directions say humidity is important. It will make a tiny white flower in the spring too.
Becky
Huh - do they propogate easy? Line the paddocks with them ;~D
LOL...I don't think they would in our climate. It says to keep the soil moist. The traps don't get big enough to get more then just house flies.
The fly I have in there now must be smarter then the other, he's been in there awhile. Supposedly they put out a scent that attracts flies.

Found this on google:
"The Venus Fly Trap is the most famous of all carnivorous plants due to the active and efficient nature of its unique traps. Since Darwin first described the plant in 18?? the plant has mystified scientist and botanists worldwide. Most early scientists believed the plant to be a myth until physical proof of such a plants existence was offered. The Venus Fly Trap has no cousins and is the only member of the Dionaea genus.
The VFT produces a short fleshy leaf that carries a modified tip that forms two sides of the trap, each side contains three hairs which when touched two to three times causes the two sides to spring shut in a very rapid motion fast enough to catch flies and other insects. The leaf once closed then exudes a series of enzymes that slowly dissolve the internal juices of the insect and hence supply the plant with food. After a few days the trap re-opens leaving the skeleton of the insect to be washed out by the rain. If no insect is caught by the trap the leaves re-open within a few hours to prepare for the next insect to arrive. The VFT comes from soils that are very poor in nutrients so the plant has adapted itself to finding nutrients from other means rather than starve. VFT's can easily grow without ever eating insects.
There is only one species of Dionaea but there are many varietal forms of this single species and many collectors specialize in collecting these varieties. The most recent forms are the all red varieties now becoming available.

Take a picture of that! :~D
LOL, OK.
Blake asked me if flies have bones, I guess they do.
Becky
How's your brother?
Becky
(copied from HH)
He's still in the hospital... unfortunately, and he's really tired of being there. They are quite concerned about the infection worsening, and are going to keep him at least another day.
Really he feels pretty good and his pain is much less, so he was quite disappointed to not be able to go home.
He's tired of the whole thing and I feel bad for him. I think the worst part of hospitals is that everything seems to be in slow motion, hours of waiting, no one knows how long till anything is supposed to happen. And as of today, they still weren't letting him eat.
I brought him my copy of LoTR.... always a good time to re-read that. What he'd most like is to get up and move around... and then to eat. He might get to eat by tonight, if they decide he won't be having any more surgery.
Thanks for asking..: Looking forward to this being over.
Do they know where the infection originated?
It's tomorrow morning. I'll post pics as soon as I get back.
I'm really excited! Maybe even more than my daughter is...or maybe not - she says she can't sleep because of butterflies in the tummy. :-D
Not really... He ended up with a very painful abscess that just got out of control.
Have fun.... we will be looking forward to the pics :~D
Neat! But those fly traps really give me the creeps!
Good morning
Becky
Very soon!
We're getting ready to head out the door.
It's almost an hour's drive to the ranch and we want to get there early.
Have fun:)
