This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
LOL..they do go thru some funny looking stages.:)

lol. I'd say that she's itchy! Looks like she's going to be very pretty once she loses all of her baby fuzz. I like the coloring that she's starting to get on her neck. It shows up nicely in the picture where she has her head tucked in.
Oh dear. That's such a bad bendy place to doctor, you're right. I hope they don't get infected and can close up clean.
Glad you caught your friend to cancel before she loaded. That was nice of you to go over there.
How do your injured ones look this morning?
I have to run up to the beach house. You won't believe it.... Dad's new truck is in the shop. Been in the shop since last week. Some kind of defect warranty item with the transmission.... it thudded when it shouldn't have. He's waiting for it, he's mad about it, and he has stuff he needs a truck for. I'm gonna take him the old truck for the day and let him run some errands.
Yeah, she was trying to scratch the point of her right shoulder in that picture, but the arch in her neck looked nice. I've been meaning to take the clippers to her and get rid of the rest of that fuzz. It just seems to hang on forever.
I hate to hear about your Dad's new truck. It's not a good sign. This guy I work with bought a new Ford and just had no end of trouble with it. It was continually in the shop. He didn't have to pay for it, but it was still very inconvenient, even though they gave him another truck to drive while they were working on it. He finally just sold it and bought a new 4-door Toyota Tundra truck. Hopefully this'll be a one-time thing.
I hope it's a one time thing too. Confidence is a big thing with my dad, and if he doesn't like and trust the truck, he'll worry about taking it anywhere.
Initially, they were out of loaners, so they paid for a rental until Friday last week. Then he had to return it and was offered a loaner from the dealer, but he'd have to go back to Port Orchard to get it. It was complicated and he doesn't want to deal with it.
I'm sorry for your dad's trouble. Are you going to leave him your old truck, or just wait on it.
Harley doesn't act like anything is hurting. His back leg cut is swelled up pretty good. Kristy is bringing some medicene made for this kind of thing, I don't remember the name. It's some kind of green gel stuff. We'll put it on and wrap it for the day.
Rocky still seems to moving slow to me. It may just be my imagination. I'm going to bute both of them for a few days, then see how they are before going to a vet.
I've been outside mowing, burning feed bags, cleaning up some trash stuff, gardening etc...It's a very nice day, and I don't particularly even want to think of horses for a few days:).
Becky
What a darling!
Be sure and check on the label with the Granulex. It's really only for very serious wounds.
Wonder Dust is about 80% slaked lime. It's good.
You can all see I am a wound-medicine expert as proud owner of Miss Accident-Prone for the last 8 years.
It's probably not your imagination. When you know a horse, you know if they feel good or not, and if moving is easy or is a chore. If Rocky got kicked good, it'd be sore for a few days even if nothing really shows.
I think that back leg might be Harley's worst injury.... looked like it yesterday, and lower legs are slow to heal, they just have very poor circulation down there. Funny thing (or not) is that where it is, he probably did that to himself. It looks like he clipped himself trying to kick at Rock.
I know I should have, but I haven't. I know it has some kind of acid in it that kinda eats away the proud flesh. I'll have to read it this afternoon. Can it do bad things or something?
OK wound-medicine expert... I have a small bottle of something someone brought me when Bay's fell on his knees, that's great. I'd buy some more but I don't know what it is.
It's red liquid in a spray bottle... Stings a bit... and is called "Scarlet" something. Any idea?
Dionne) Non-drying oleaginous antiseptic dressing. Use as an external application for aid in the treatment of superficial lacerations, wire cuts, burns & surface wounds of horses & mules. Can be used as an open wound treatment or under a bandage.
Great! Thank you! I was happy with how Bay's skinned knees healed, and that was what I used.
Scarlex® (Farnam) Contains Powerful germicide & fungicide of scarlet oil & P-Chloro-M-Xylenol in a soothing antiseptic dressing that promotes rapid healing of surface lesions, wounds dermatitis, cuts & burns.
It sounds like good stuff. I've seen it for years but never used it. There's just so MUCH stuff available for wounds that I just kinda go into information overload and don't know what to use. It's good to hear from somebody that's used it.
No, it's probably the liquid in the little bottle you posted. Bob brought it to me in a little plastic bottle he had poured some into, so it didn't have a label. I still have a little left, I didn't have to use a lot of it, a little goes a long way.
I liked it for his knees because it was non-drying, being on his knees if they got dry the scabs would just crack when he moved, and because it wasn't goopy like furazone, that would just get caked with dirt when he rolled.
Anyway... I'm ready to go. - prolly check in from the beach house later.
Have a good trip! :o)
Boy, this must be the week - another mess. I hope she heals fine.
