The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I woke up and couldn't sleep so I checked the thread.

Rusty did great, the lady likes him, but now wants to think about it:) I don't blame her. She stood out here and talked to nearly 10. Sounded like she'd talk herself into it one minute and out the next.

I tried to call the girl I am suppose to go to Arrowhead today, but their phone is unlisted. I want to cancel. I think Rocky really is sore. I think that's why I'm awake. Freting about telling her I'm not going when she gets here this morning. I feel bad about canceling like that, but that's what you get when you have unlisted phone numbers. If it pisses her off, oh well.

I'll run to town and get some bute first thing and bute them both, I just didn't have time to go get any yesterday. I think by the first of the week Rocky will be fine. I just don't want to take him to Arrowhead, lots of hill to climb there.

Thanks for your concern. We'll all be fine:)

Becky

I can't imagine what stallions look like after a real fight in the wild.

I thought that too. The lady wanted to see Rusty lope circles. While I was doing it I noticed the ground in the arena. I think that is where at least part of the fight took place. There are some pretty good skid marks and gouges in the ground. Probably in the wild there is more room for them to get away from each other.

Actually, I checked the thread this morning, just to see how they were doing. How's Harley holding up?

I haven't been out there yet this morning. But last night Harley actually seemed less stiff and sore then Rock. Who knows about horses:) I'm wondering if Rocky isn't sore from the effort of the fight. He had to be really working hard to do that much damage:)

Oh, and I just got in the truck and ran over to the girls house that I was going to ride with and caught her before she loaded. She was fine, and understood. She's going to call me later and give me her phone number:).

Good morning Becky, good morning all.

A great rain last night and this morning! Still raining. A godsend. We were hurting here in this part of the country.
I even came up and unplugged the computer, the lightning was so close.

You had a valid reason to cancel, can't ride a sore horse. You'd just make it worse. I did have a lady cancel on me once because she had a headache. Her husband was an emergency room doctor, for God's sake. Ask him to give you something and let's go! This woman was always making riding plans but backing out at the last minute. I never did see her actually get on a horse and they eventually sold them all and moved back to town.

You don't know anyone in Lavernia named Grammer, do you? Oh, my ancestors that lived in the rock house, their name was Barker and that house has always been referred to as "The Barker Mansion." (I talked to my mother last night, they are in Ruidoso). We never did find where they are buried, possibly somewhere on that land. My mother's great great grandfather built the house. She also said that the man in the picture was planning to fix the house up and move into it. When she gets back to town she's going to email him and see if they did it and send pictures.

Morning.
Looks like I'm going to get paid after all. *whew*
The concert was great. It didn't rain at all, and the temps were nice and cool. It's still cool at about 69 degrees, and it's only getting up to the low to mid 70s. What a relief from the 100 degree weather we had yesterday. Amazingly it hasn't stormed with the drop in temps, but I wish that it would because we really, really need the rain.

Speaking of battles through the fence, this is what I got the pleasure of dealing with yesterday afternoon when I went to feed...

Seems we've all had a run of bad luck here lately. Apparently Miss Grace had a disagreement with either the Jenny or one of the cows through the fence. I didn't notice it at first and went about feeding everybody, but I noticed a long deep scratch on her left buttock and when I went to look at it I saw one further down and that one led me to see all the others. All I could say was "Holy Sh!t!". She must've wheeled and kicked and her legs went through the fence and she did all this trying to get them back out. It hadn't been done too long when I got there coz everything still looked pretty fresh. I clipped all the hair out of it, sponged it down with a solution of epsom salt, betadine, pickling salt and water, then put some Furazone ointment on it. None of them are deep enough to require stitches, but it just looks like so much hamburger meat. I hate it, but maybe next time she won't be as quick to wheel and kick. Like we've all said before, it's always something with horses!

Oh Man Becky! Poor ol' Harley. He looks like he's been through a meat grinder. Stallions sure are Hell on 4 feet when they get after something. They just won't quit. Man I hate it!

Good grief, I'm afraid to outside and look at the horses, no telling what I'm going to find. Tuffy was fine at 9 o'clock, he ate my popsickle.

...I was just looking at my Jeffer's catalog and came aross that AluSpray. Think I'll order some.

Sounds like good stuff. I may order some too. It'd probably be good to put on Grace's legs to keep the flys out.

Frog that looks awful; my Thoroughbred's wound is one big one. We're all getting beat-up horses here!

I put on that AluSpray last night and it turned the whole wound area silver! I am about to go down to feed and wash out the wound and I'll see how the 'spray-on bandage' (AluSpray) worked. I am still in jammies looking at the nice, nice rain.

Tuffy, I don't know anybody except my friend there in LaVernia. And they aren't really from there, they are San Antonians who moved to the country. But you know, you could contact some local historical society and ask them if they have cemetery lists. They usually do.

To all: remember from my earlier post that my vet said slaked lime was good on large cuts higher up on the body where there is a lot of muscle mass. It closes wounds.

Looks like Grace has her cuts down on legs.

I am measuring my Thorougbred for a strait jacket.

The Grammer lady is the local historian, since it seems to be such a small world I was hoping she was your friend. :)

LOL on the strait jacket. Make Tuffy one, too, while you're at it.

Yeah, I just really didn't know what to put on it. I've got some Wonder Dust, which I assume works alot like the slaked lime you're talking about, but I didn't wanna put that on there for the reason you said, too little meat there. I thought about the Granulex but decided no on that one too and just went with the water soluble Furazone for now. I may end up using the Granulex later if she starts getting proud flesh. I thought about wrapping it, but in a bendy place like that I'm sure it wouldn't have stayed on. I'll see how it looks this evening after I soak it.

A while back you were wanting to see a new picture of Ellie. Well, here she is in all her moth-eaten glory. She was very itchy that day...
