We will not falter, we will not tire, we will not fail.

This day in history:

1850 - The gas mask was patented on this day. It was an invention of B.J. Lane of Cambridge, MA
1881-President Garfield was shot.
1889: To regulate commercial trusts and monopolies, Congress passes the Sherman Antitrust Act, which outlaws any "combination or conspiracy in restraint of trade."
1921 - The first prize fight offering a million-dollar gate was broadcast on radio. Jack Dempsey knocked out George Carpentier in the fourth round of the bout in Jersey City, NJ.
1933 - Baseball great Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants hurled 18 innings of shutout ball to lead the Giants to a 1-0 win over St. Louis in the first half of a doubleheader at the Polo Grounds in New York.
1937-Amelia Earhart disappears.
1961: Writer Ernest Hemingway commits suicide in Ketchum, Idaho, at the age of 61.
1964-President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act

It looks like a great day for gardening with much cooler temperatures for today.

I remember when we had emission tests in Indiana, back in the 70's. The ligislature revoked the law because it was such a pain for the public, with ho appreciable benefit.

What NYS did in late 2004 was to exempt all vehicles prior 1996 and instead of a tailpipe test they now have a computerized system that goes directly to the DMV. With that said....We all know how reliable computers are and on-line services!!

We rely on 2 vehicles because each one is up there in mileage and we like to split the travel miles. Plus, the Jeep is used to tow the boat. Lots of added unnecessary miles on the Jeep recently.

Well I'll be due for inspection in Oct. It remains to be seen how that will go.

Girlchild and I tried to go to my long-time favorite lake today.

It was run by our town for many, many decades, but due to the modern invention of condo's, townhouses, and developments with in-ground pools, its' popularity wore off this past decade. The county then took it over and we still enjoyed the closeness and quietness of it.

Today we went out and we to be the last car load allowed in...there were maybe?? 60 people there? When I asked why, was told there is a new capacity limit because the lakehouse had been condemned due to mold growing. That was when I noticed the port-a-potty's....ughhh and no snack bar/showers/changing rooms either.

So we turned the car around..it wasn't like we were getting a reduced entry fee due to limited services.

Guess I'll be off to find another place to go.

In from outdoor work with mil.

Sorry to hear that.

No doubt about it....we live in a "that's not good enough world."

I love the new, but why can't good things remain the same?

Your car is new so I don't think you should have a problem. I hated inspection time before....I loathe it now.

Good afternoon, and thanks for starting this thread, lysie! Some interesting things happened today in history, and I appreciate your noting them.

I got up early and planted some rose mallow I'd started earlier; I put them next to the hollyhocks, as I figure they're cousins anyway, LOL! Then ran errands to get ready for visiting family this weekend. Now, I'm just checking in quickly before doing a little more "readying up".

Well, I really go for the traditional "cottage casual" (okay, cluttered, LOL!) look in my garden, so I grab anything with the tag "an old-fashioned favorite". Most of my plants and seeds have come from friends and relatives, and it's neat to walk around and remember who they came from, especially if that person has passed away.

I am trying (without much success, however) to get hubby to take his digital camera out and take a few shots of all my "old-timers". Am studying up on how to post them properly, since that is NOT my strong suit.

Hack, hack, cough cough. My goodness, the grass is so dry it was like blowing dirt while I was mowing.

Does wonders for the allergies, doesn't it?

I attended a Garden Walk this afternoon. I took my Mom along. More than 170 day lilies, lots of different Phlox, really wonderful stuff. It was just Incredible.

Oh my goodness! This is something which will divert my attention in Mass tonite, I just know it.

I'd like to see a personality analysis of the person who belongs to that water garden.

I'm not fond of the hands, but the water spritzing through the teeth made me chuckle.
