Tom Cruise Proposes to Katie Holmes
AP ^ | 6/17/05 | SOPHIE NICHOLSON

Actor Tom Cruise said he and girlfriend Katie Holmes are engaged, after he popped the question early Friday morning atop the Eiffel Tower.

Cruise, speaking at a Paris news conference with Holmes, said: "Yes, I proposed to her."

The couple often shared smiles and blushes as Cruise turned to look at her, with a massive diamond ring on her finger.

"It was early this morning at the Eiffel Tower, so I haven't slept at all," he said. "Today is a magnificent day for me, I'm engaged to a magnificent woman."

Asked why he chose the famed Paris landmark, he said: "I've never been to the Eiffel Tower. It's Paris, it's a beautiful city, it's very romantic."

Cruise said no date for a wedding has been set: "We haven't discussed that - one step at a time," he said. "Let's see. We're not sure."

Cruise, 42, was in Paris to promote the French release of the Steven Spielberg film "War of the Worlds" next month. He and 26-year-old Holmes went public with their romantic relationship in April.

Holmes did not speak to reporters, but at one point, Cruise whispered to her: "Are you OK?" Afterward, the two hurried into a car before leaving for a promotional event in Marseilles, southern France.

"I wish them the happiest marriage that anyone has ever had," said Dakota Fanning, the child actress who co-stars with Cruise in the film. She sat next to Holmes during the news conference.

Cruise and Holmes have faced repeated rumors of marriage. The relationship started after Cruise split from actress Penelope Cruz, and Holmes and actor Chris Klein called off their long-standing engagement.

While in Berlin two days ago, Cruise dismissed speculation by tabloid newspapers and celebrity gossip columns that their relationship is a stunt to promote their new movies.

Holmes was in London earlier this week to promote her new film, "Batman Begins." She had also dismissed accusations that the couple had staged a relationship for publicity.

Holmes said then that she was embracing Scientology - Cruise's religion. The former star of television's "Dawson's Creek" grew up with a poster of Cruise on her bedroom wall and has said she grew up wanting to marry him.

I work in the news business. We run a daily collection of "people" briefs off the wire. IMHO, there is a place for gossipy stuff like that, the news can't be heavy all the time. The thing is, I'll wager you that in probably 12 of the last 14 days, there has been an item about these two. So my question is not "who cares," because again, there's an element out there that does, it's "why in the world has everybody lost their collective minds over these two?"

Holmes did not speak to reporters L. Ron Hubbard didn't say she could.

Not only that, Tom auditioned/interviewed Jennifer Garner and Jessica Alba for the job of beard and they both turned him down before moving to Katie.

Katie Holmes was number 3 on his list.

"I think that Tom Cruise might be manic.... He has just a little bit too much energy these days."

Agreed. He needs to increase his meds.

It was described as "stupid" when posted. This is a Hollywood breaking story. I'm sick of reading negative Bush, Iraq, economic, tax, energy, treason, nominations, impeachment, Gitmo... crap. Liberal media is touting this event as big time.

"Why in the world has everybody lost their collective minds over these two?"

5,000 years ago, when incipient city/states in Mesopotamia began building the foundations of civilization, it's easy to imagine that a great deal of their time was spent on "what prince was courting which princess" when they weren't busy fending off neighboring tribes and/or collecting the harvest.

I've never understood this. When the cute, employed, somewhat-nerdly youth who is now my husband asked me to to marry him, I said, "Sure. When?" and went for the calendar.

A ring without a date is just a payment for services rendered.

"Poor Katie.....doesn't being number 3 raise any concerns especially with a man who walked out on his kids?"

I agree, and she's young & dumb, but those kids were nothing more than "props" for his continuing PR Machine, IMHO.

I sure wish Nicole would spill her guts!

Did he promise Katie the 3-picture deal that Nicole got? Or did Katie have to settle for 2 pictures and a villa in the south of France?

Isn't Tom Thumb a little old for this level of giddy effusiveness? Do any of these clowns comprehend 'low profile'? Why do we have to have their every emotion and action foisted on us AS IF it matters? I don't even think he is any kind of an actor...and I don't know or care who she is...except that I feel sorry for her.

I don't really care that these two are engaged, but I would not say Tom walked out on his kids. Its unfortunate that the marriage did not work out, but he's always seemed to be very involved with his kids. I find it quite refreshing for a hollywood type.
