Interesting contrast, isn't it, between the wonderful, forgiving woman we've been discussing, and the pathetic, hateful tripe posted immediately above.

I read "The hiding Place", years ago.

It was given to me by my 7th grade English teacher, just as i was leaving school for several months of extensive and painful surgery.

It's a wonderful book, and it helped me a lot.

I wonder if she still refers to military officers disparagingly, as she did while (yuck) First Lady.

I remember Chelsea, as a 12 year old, being quoted as saying her parents hated the military...Ahh...poor Chels, banished to London. Hope she finds some Americans to celebrate the 4th of July with.

BTW, re: Michael Jackson vacationing in Bahrain..one of the tabs is reporting that he, against his lawyer's advice, sent all the jurors a bracelet with a heart and the words Love inscribed on it, or some such sentiment.

Geez, could MJ be any more delusional? I hope those jurors are proud of themselves now (but I hope even more that he stays in Bahrain). As for Chelz, I wonder if that report that she and Ian are kaput is true. Funny how the press no longer breathlessly reports on her every move like they did a couple years ago. She's been upstaged by Paris Hilton as queen of the social butterflies, I guess.

I doubt that Chels' vanishing from the PR scene is anything more than the Beaste's wishes.

Chelsea Clinton will be working for her dad's old buddy - Prime Minister Tony Blair. The former First Daughter, employed since 2003 at the management consulting giant McKinsey, has been assigned to work on a British government project, according to London's Mail.

The huge project, called Monitor, is charged with overseeing and regulating hospital trust funds, part of Blair's health care reform legislation. Critics of the Monitor say it has spent most of its budget on private contractors - like former President Bill Clinton's daughter.

McKinsey also has raised eyebrows for its cozy relationship with the Blair administration. Blair and the former President were pals during Clinton's term in office and remain friends.

Two years ago, Chelsea Clinton turned down a job at McKinsey's London offices because she wanted to live in New York City. So the firm hired her for its New York digs.

Now 25 and with a master's degree in international relations from Oxford University, she lives in the Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea - of course. She commutes to McKinsey's midtown office and is often spotted in trendy downtown restaurants with her boyfriend Ian Klaus.

Bill Clinton's daughter Chelsea has been seconded by McKinsey, the consultants with close links to Downing Street, to work on a £10million Government project. She is understood to be receiving a package worth £90,000 at the offices of Monitor, the new regulator for foundation hospitals. ...

But the fact that the salary of Mr Clinton's only child is effectively being funded by a New Labour quango will add to questions about the way in which McKinsey has apparently become the Government's favourite consulting firm almost overnight. The relationship appears to have blossomed since former BBC chief John Birt, now Lord Birt, was appointed as Tony Blair's adviser four years ago. He is employed by McKinsey as a strategic consultant and has been followed into Downing Street by a number of other 'McKinseyites'. ...

Last night Shadow Health Minister Simon Burns said: 'It is extraordinary that the Government should award large contracts without any competitive tendering, and it is equally extraordinary that contracts like this should be going to a company with close links to New Labour. It does give the impression that it is "jobs for the boys" and it is most unwise of a Government that pays lipservice to transparency and openness that they should expose themselves in this way, and to accusations of sleaze.' ...

I finally saw "Saving Private Ryan" in its entirety last night and, having visited the D-Day beaches and the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer a few years ago (the one seen at the beginning and end of the movie), again was quite affected by the enormous sacrifice of our troops and our country in WWII. The dying Captain said to Pvt. Ryan, "Earn this," words which also apply to us, in my opinion. Certainly, we should conduct all aspects of our lives in constant awareness of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ to save us from sin, but I believe we also always should keep in mind what our soldiers have given in the name of perserving our earthly freedom, with regard to the way we live in society. The Ryan character was concerned that he had lived a good life, "earning" what the soldiers had given to preserve his life.

I thought of this at 4 a.m. today when I was awakened by the noise of the teenage boy across the street. He was in his yard talking loudly on a cell phone, arguing with his girlfriend Tabitha over their mutual infidelity with much cursing, f-bombs and Jerry Springer-like vocabulary (WhatEVer! WhatEVer! WhatEVer!). Having already been awakened earlier at 1 a.m. by the same family's barking dog, it occurred to me that honoring the memory of the soldiers who have fought to preserve our free society by being a better neighbor probably isn't high on his list at that moment, but that shouldn't stop me from trying to do so.

One should not expect the most brilliant of thoughts to spill from my little peabrain at 4 a.m., but there you have it. Thank you, Founding Fathers and all those who have served to protect and maintain this nation. Whether or not we have deserved it, we are grateful. Happy Independence Day to all.

I caught the tail end of that and cried, as I knew I would.

Then flipping channels, came across the military channel and watched several segments of the Revolutionary War. It talked about how the Americans got weary of the war, how the British attacked the South and how Charleston fell and how for months and months fathers fought against sons, brother against brother, one pro America and one pro British. It also talked about those who flip-flopped on both sides as the success would shift. It made me think of today - those who grow weary (all of us at times), those who wonder what the heck we're doing in Iraq after having supported it initially, and those who go with whatever is easier. Human nature hasn't changed. It was the visionaries in the late 1700's that saw us through the war, and it will be the visionaries in 2005 who do the same.

Hold strong in faith that we are doing the right thing and will succeed. That will insure that we DO succeed.

Happy 4th of July, everyone.

That sums it up pretty well. I have no idea why some Americans do not realize that they live in the very greatest nation in the world!!!
