The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yah... at least for now...

I'm still haggling with the purchasing dude over my new computer. Our purchasing dept is not always the sharpest set of knives in the drawer. I keep getting quotes from him that show a two to four week delivery time for the new 'puter when I've already sent him links to next-day available sites with the same price.

Arrgh. I don't want it next week. I'll be travelling next week.

Yeah ok - After I asked I went and looked at your itinerary and found it on a map. I didn't know where that was!

Any trees there or are you all the way down in the flat ag-type land? East side is a lot different than the west side of the Cascades, huh! :~D

You need it tomorrow!

If he'd ordered it today, it would be a done deal. But the purchasing department in most companies is notoriously silly.

Especially when it deals with computers.

I sent a funny request to I.T. (a parody song called "I wanna New Mouse") for an optical mouse to replace my horrible rollerball.

It took 2 WEEKS to get a mouse.

Evening OT - sounds like the trip is going well. Wine tasting, blueberries. I'm going to have you schedule my field reviews. My last one we all got soaked and I sprained my ankle. I like yours better.

So far so good. Went to the wine place....had some pretty good seafood in Salem. After Madras, we go to Hood River to do grapes. Maybe there's some more wine tasting in store.

The guy at the wine place said they couldn't ship to Kansas. Guess we'll have to send it to Missouri and run it across the border. :)

If it's English and "Goblet of Fire", I don't care whether it's hardcover or not, but I'd love to get my hands on it!

I actually found an English version of "Chamber of Secrets" in the used bookstore here. Some people, huh?

yah... my guys are always side-stepping our purchasing dept and going straight to CDW or Fry's or whatever... then I get yelled at when they do it. I *know* why they do it... 'cuz they *need the stuff*. so... I figger I'll do it the "right" way for my own 'puter.

Sheesh. I could have it tomorrow, but no...

Sorry, hon. I told ya to use your birthday as leverage. ;-)

I got some *looks* for buying some cheap speakers for my computer (company obviously doesn't provide speakers).

So, I didn't want to be a "repeat offender" by going out and buying a mouse.

But the out-of-pocket expense for a mouse is nothing compared to a laptop, so I'd go with your plan too!

Yeesh... little stuff like mouses and keyboards we stock up. Hand 'em out like candy... heck, we don't even cross charge for 'em.

Speakers we have a room full of. Most people *don't* want 'em. They're a problem sometimes...

We can do that, we'll wait for a moonless night, LSA will be driving and we'll all take a run on the 'Thunder Road'.

My guess is that the I.T. department has to send out requisitions each time someone needs a mouse, keyboard, etc.

They stall hoping that you'll just give up.

Right now, I have no UPS. I've been telling them for 6 weeks that the UPS was on the fritz. Beeping for no reason, turned off a couple of times...just weird stuff.

Finally, shut off one day just like that. Reset button didn't work. Changing outlets didn't work. Plugging it back in next day....nothin'.

They finally came down and took the UPS, but didn't give me a replacement. I had to go to the supply room and find a surge protector.

*sigh* So, everytime we get a power flicker, my PC turns off while everyone else merrily continues working. :-P
