The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Thanks!
I compromised to the heat and took the bus halfway home. Think it worked though I need to remember not to try as hard in the afternoon. Waaaay too hot for that.

I did the RAMROD (Ride Around Mt. Rainier in One Day) last year which starts and ends in Enumclaw and goes up and down 2 passes and covers 154 miles. I tried to get into it this year, but am way down on the waiting list, so not much hope of doing it this year. :( They only allow 800 riders to do it, so it's not easy to get in. I'll just try again for next year, I guess.
I'm not sure if that's the one you're thinking of, but there are a couple of others like that. One is called the "Courage Classic" which I think goes over Snoqualmie, Blewett, and Stevens Passes over 3 days. I've never done that, though I might try it someday.

When do you leave? Will you have online access while you're gone?

I can't imagine having to face the heat like that every day. Around here, even when it's hot, which isn't very often and isn't very hot, I still get to go home along the waterfront where there's always cool air coming from the water.
Last year on STP, we had moderate heat but people were still suffering heat exhaustion and heat stroke from it. Yikes. Be sure to drink lots of water!!

I leave Friday morning. Back Tuesday night. I could have internet but I'm not going to. Leaving the computer behind and everything. Love you guys, but I want to make sure I actually spend my time with my family.
Plus I couldn't be online until we finish reading HP anyway.

We used to use regular canning jars back when Mom did sprouts.
I've seen sprouting jars at the natural food store that are basically just an oversized canning jar set-up. Hey, if it works, it works! I love sprouts, but haven't attempted them ever. Just seems high maintenance. Wish they were cheaper to buy as sprouts, but they're usually expensive.
But they sure are tasty. All kinds...

Heh... between today's slowness and Sunday's outage, I'm being reminded just how addicted to FR I am. Maybe it'll be good to be away for a couple days.

What's high maintenance?? You just rinse 'em a couple times a day then eat 'em!
Keeping that darn kefir going was high maintenance! Yowzer, it was exhausting! I am only dealing with about 8 ounces now and it's still a bit nerve-wracking! It just keeps making more and more...like the Blob! LOL
Fixin' to storm here. I got the meat chickens back into their tote.

I'm just afraid I'd do the rinsing wrong and they'd rot. Or forget one time and lose the batch. Or something. Am I being silly?
And do they sell seed mixes at any natural foods store? For not too much?

Sometimes you can get sprout mixes at most good health food stores. When I worked at one, I just got a bag of beans or seed that wasn't shelled or cooked in any way. I think Sproutman has a good sprouting guide. Also, Ann Wigmore has a very good book about sprouting.

What or who is Sproutman? A site?
Maybe I'll check if there are any sprout mixes at Whole Foods next time I'm there. I want to go soon - I'm all but out of bulgar and I'm craving tabouli. I looooove that stuff.

Naw, they're not that picky... just rinse 'em now and then and they'll do fine. Put them in indirect light...my kitchen window never gets full sun.
I like my screen because it lets the husks out.
I am sprouting radish seeds now and lentils. My lentils are just the cheap ones you get at the supermarket.

Whew!
Scrubbed every surface in the kitchen, washed dishes, and cleaned the microwave. Next up; take out trash and scrub the bathroom.
This is harder work than biking!

I'm thinking there must be a site somewhere that lists sprouting time for the more typical types of sprouts. I love radish sprouts! Mom used to mix some in with alfalfa sprouts just to add a little zip. Mmmm...
Do you rinse 'em right in the jar, then?

My mom went through a sprout faze and we were really glad when she got out of it! Can't stand the stuff, tastes like lawn. It was only slightly better than the soy faze.
