The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

By mid-afternoon today I will have made just shy of 40 pints of peach jam.

I gotta tell you...
My neighbor across the street just came over and gave me a big vat of potatoe salad! One of those kinds you can buy in the store, pre-made, you know? She said it was left over from a church potluck. It was still sealed, never been opened!
I gave her a pint of jam. LOL!!!

I asked Steve if he could get the afternoon off. It's unlikely. I'm loathe to drive it by myself...it's an hour away. My car is so iffy...and I'd have the jedis with me...

Hey.... where in CO? You should see if it's open in a couple years when you can move!

Well, it's a good thing you did stop! Try again in a few months. And congrats on getting as far as you did!
Wait... soo.... you did a triathalon and then hopped a plane? Sheesh, man, ever heard of pacing yourself?

I've been freezing beans back like there's no tomorrow. I have 19 2-serving size packages frozen and the garden is *still* producing - and this from only 12 sq ft in the garden. I have to pick every day. And we got the first two pickling cukes in - so now I'm going to have to try pickling again.
I love my garden. :)
To: Lil'freeper
Sigh, I don't even have a full "mess" of beans yet. I'm thinking my garden still needs more sun. Definitely needs more rain, but I've been watering it.

Square foot gardening is sure fun! Steve got our beds all weeded this weekend...I'd like to put in a fall garden. We skipped it all together this year because it's hard for me to do it all alone. But he should be around for a fall garden!

Am going to rip out the peas this weekend to get ready for the fall replanting. I'm having terrible troubles with japanese beetles. They like to settle on the tallest plants and eat them - namely my pole beans. You've never seen sorrier plants. :( The bush beans are fine, though.
To: JenB
Yeah, although as short a distance as I got I was not all that wiped out afterward. (although apparently might heart probably was) I did get sleeping and a headache later in the day so I am sure I was more wiped than just my muscles thought. I am in Rochester until Wednesday evening. It was a busy weekend, what with the Anime Iowa meeting on Saturday and all.
To: Lil'freeper
My grapevine was covered with beetles. I sprayed 'em pretty good. Even caught a couple enjoying...um...recreational activities.
Still don't think I'll have grapes this summer, but the vine is pretty healthy. At least now that the beetles are gone.

We sprayed the ornamentals, but not the garden. I don't want that stuff in my food. We're hoping to disrupt their life cycle a bit with a combo of chemicals and milky spore. Of course it's a futile effort because the neighbors have no such plans and their beetles will eat my pole beans next year.
To: Lil'freeper
I probably neglected the grapes too long. I haven't had any real bug problems with the rest of the garden.
Chipmunks are a different story.
