The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Also, remember that omega three fatty acids remove cholesterol from the bloodstream. It's why the oatmeal industry touts it. But you have eat a massive amount of oatmeal each day to get the recommended amount (I think it's 3gms)

You can get 4 gms of the same fatty acids by eatting flaxseed meal...about 3 tbsps. Steve enjoys his ground, with hot water on it like a hot cereal, with splenda and blueberries.

Had half of one for breakfast this morning, chopped on a whole wheat tortilla. But then, I topped it with bacon and cheese (and salsa), so maybe I canceled out any benefits. Ah well. It was tasty!

I love avocados. And they're much more available and inexpensive here than they typically are back home!

Yep, they're good. But they're $2 here for a small over-ripe one. We rarely buy them.

They're often under a dollar here for nice ones. I'll enjoy 'em while the season lasts!

I guess that should probably do it...we like to eat it for the fiber too, because it straightened out my IBS I used to suffer from. What does it say about the omega 3 fatty acids? How much do you get per capsule?

Fix avacodas for breakfast more often, then I won't want any breakfast. Not that I ever do. ;-)

Saturated Fat elevates bad cholesterol

Er, no. *Some* saturated fats elevate 'bad' cholesterol. The *some* being the man-made fats like crisco and margarine and all the hydrogenated oils. They damage cells (don't fit in the membranes quite right) and the body responds by making cholesterol to go fix the problem.

Other saturated fats, such as butter or lard, are absolutely neutral. This has been demonstrated in research that was smart enough to control for the artificial trans fats. The studies that suggest all sat fats are bad have no such controls and are very sloppy science.

And still more saturated fats, such as coconut oil, can lower cholesterol. There are different grades of the stuff, some smell and taste more like coconut than others. Some are tasteless. It's very good for pan-frying meats.

An extremely good book on the topic of fats and oils is "Know Your Fats" by Mary Enig. It's written for the non-chemist reader.

Lazy weekend. Biking, swiming, running and playing computer games. A little house work but not much. Ug, back to work. What was I doing again? Something to do with planes?

Heh. 'Bout the same here. Also it's very quiet and there's no motivation for any of us to do anything becaue nothing needs to be done and the boss is away all week.

How's the car?

Oh, fun. It's too bad to be stuck at home on a long weekend if you wanted to be somewhere else.

I had a fun weekend... did some reading, did a lot of writing, watched a little too much tv.
