The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

And Nana says my only fault is that I don't put enough dirt around my plants.

That square foot gardening method has suggestions for garden beds up on saw horses for folks with mobility problems. Puh-haps you can put her to work ....

I pretty much fend for myself other than at dinner time.

I've thought of that. I used blocks to set them up this year. But I might try the raised bed approach next year.

I need to start turning the compost pile...it works faster that way.

I've got the lumber for the second bed. I just need the corners. I want to get the stackable corners so the bed will be nice and deep for the 'mater roots.

As I have done many times in the past, I am wishing you lived closer to me...we'd have a great time, I suspect.

:-)

Are you opposed to raw goat milk? Would that be an option?

Yeah, my compost pile is decomposing vey slowly. I'm not even gonna have room for this year's leaves. I think I need to get one of those "starter" products to add to the pile.

I grew up on the stuff! It's fantastic. Mom made cheese (very plain) and yogurt with it.

Didn't have cows' milk 'till I hit kindergarten.

One thing you'll learn from reading Price is that peoples all around the world 'discovered' milk to be a healthy food - camel milk, yak milk, cow milk, goat milk, etc. And not just milk, but milk products such as butters, cheeses, and other ferments like yogurt. All of it raw, of course.

and worms. Worms help a bunch.

I borrowed some from the garden and *poof*: hyperspeed compost.

The reason I asked is because I found a local goat dairy at the "real milk" website. But Maryland doesn't show any results. PA does though...is it close enough to you for a weekend jaunt?

Maryland is a fascist hell. The only food choices they think yer capable of making is deciding between Pepsi and Coca-cola.

But fortunately I'm close to the PA border. Just haven't had time lately - or a place to store the milk. Trips will be few and far between so I'll be buying in bulk and freezing back... now that I have a freezer.

Another reason why I want that second bed up. I've got leaves from last fall composting in bags that I need to speed up.

I'm hoping we can get rid of some trees this year. I'm NOT looking forward to the falling leaves.

Back later. Stuff on my desk is composting...

Steve has a rubbermaid tote full of red worms in his office! I kid you not. Whenever we drop by to visit him, it's quite the attraction for the jedis.

He feeds them our coffee grounds and our natural egg shells and scraps of old tee-shirt. Funny, they'll eat the entire tee-shirt, but leave the nylon thread, still all stitched, behind.

Rosie left on her bike early, so it's just me and the cats. And I'm not awake yet.

Worms like coffee. I put in coffee grounds and egg shells too. I just haven't turned the pile like I should have been doing.

Our compost heap has coffee ground, egg shells and the wood shaving litter from the meat chicken's tote.
