The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 06/01/2005 7:12:04 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

You were goin' faster today than yesterday. I kept looking away for a sec and then realizing you'd pulled ahead.

Back! Phew...I didn't realize I was sore until I got out there. I was bookin' today, too. Did the same ride as yesterday, but in about three quarters the time I did it in yesterday.

And then I used the extra time to go to the bagel shop. It is way, wayyyy too easy to get there. And a large bagel fits nicely in my fanny pack...

Coffee is being brewed. Mmm...coffee.

Evil bagel-eating fiend! We wants carbs, precious! We wants them!

Yup, like I said, stuff just started making sense. Of course my legs were really, really sore so on the hills, it took me much longer than yesterday. So my time was not much less.

B-O-R-E-D.

Nobody here is motivated. It's got a Thursday afternoon feel already. I checked through my stupid paperwork again... just need copies of the lease... should be able to get home, get the stuff, and get back with plenty of time. Or I can do it tomorrow.

Hmmm... three day weekend coming up... which could be stretched by at least half a day on both ends. What would be fun and cool to do?

Ev'rythin's up to date in Kansas City
They've gone about as fur as they c'n go!
They went and built a skyscraper seven stories high,
About as high as a buildin' orta grow.
Ev'rythin's like a dream in Kansas City,
It's better than a magic lantern show!
Y' c'n turn the radiator on
Whenever you want some heat.
With ev'ry kind o' comfort
Ev'ry house is all complete.
You c'n walk to privies in the rain
And never wet your feet!
They've gone about as fur as they c'n go,

Steve got a ticket Friday. Came in and gave me two tickets, one was a warning for changing lanes at 11pm without turning on his blinker with no other traffic on the road. The other was for not having his insurance documentation (which I have no idea why he didn't have his insurance.)

They give you 48 hours to get proof of insurance to the city clerk before your fined. So I thought I had until this afternoon (since the weekend didn't count).

So I got in there with the proof of insurance and the clerk points out the date...last THURSDAY. Steve got the ticket on Friday but apparently the officer wrote the date down wrong. I told the lady "He got this ticket on Friday!" She looked me right in the eye and said "No, he didn't...he got it on Thursday."

You know that sick feeling you get when you know you're right but can't prove it? I paid the fine.

I feel like crying.

Everyone here gets care packages with a bunch of stuff that we already have or won't use. But the idea of giving away a knife, something that EVERYONE will instantly love and appreciate is so awesome.

That's the bottom line. The Hobbit Hole is providing a unique service/product. If I was a platoon sergeant, I'd make my troops buy their own knives before deployment, under pain of eternal KP duty. But I'm not.

So the Hobbit Hole is doing the next best thing. And thanks to the generosity of Camillus, we're getting these great knives at about $20 under wholesale costs. I should know, I live and breathe knife prices as much as I do the knives themselves.

The small flood of emails of the past week have resulted in a $3000 order for more BK2s and BK3s from Camillus. This will fill all the requests, and reestablish a reasonable inventory, at a price far below the best "street" price.

It's been a busy, and costly, week, but a very satsifying one. It's my privilege to share the stories with you, for all the great moral and financial support you've shown.

Thank you so much winmag. I am humbled by your committment to this project and your willingness to put your money where your mouth is.

I thank you for giving us a dollar amount that is only the amount for this recent order. It gives us an idea... even those of us who have donated in the past... an idea of how much deeper we should all reach in our pockets to help you fund this project that bears all of our names.

I know we just sent a check for another $100. It's a drop in the bucket. Please all of you, consider sending winmag some $$$$, now and on a regular, ongoing basis. We must share the load ;~D

It had the wrong date on it. Steve got the ticket on the 24th, the officer wrote the 23rd. I asked Steve if he'd gotten the ticket on Thursday and just got around to giving it to me on Friday and he said no. He got it on Friday, gave it to me as soon as he walked in the door as he had just got it just down the street from us and I said that evening "I'll take care of this on Monday or Tuesday."

You're telling me. I just feel terrible. But there's nothing to be done.

~sigh~

Well, Joshua cleaned up his room without being told...it is practically spotless. Good a reason as any to try out the old bundt pan my mom gave me...
