The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

3.5 miles is a good distance to be doing every day. Once you've done it a few times, your legs will adjust quickly. I love getting places by bicycle, every time is a little mini-adventure.

What an interesting website! I've bookmarked it for future reference...when I have more time to look it over!

It'll be twice that unless I take the bus home. I think I can do it, though! And it's almost all a nice quiet trip, with very few lights.

Oh, my bike is a Raleigh; it's got ten speeds and it's very comfortable.

Duh! I meant 7 miles, since it's 3.5 miles one-way. ;)

Yeah....they had FR blocked under the "political activism" thing. But now I can get into Yahoo chat which I couldn't before. They also blocked a radio station from back home because it was an "MP3 site." Hehehehe....I found another stream that they didn't block so I listen to that now.

The official policiy is that they track what sites you visit. The log is available to your manager upon request. So far for 4 years, management doesn't care as long as your work is done.

LabMoot is back on! It's the week of July 11. So the weekend before or after (or maybe both but I hate to leave The Cat that long) would work.

Wonder if they'll reimburse me for pet boarding.

Oh, very cool! I still have a Raleigh road bike that I bought in 1987. It's a great bike, though I don't ride it much anymore--I sort of replaced it with a Cannondale about 8 years ago and I ride that one everywhere.

It's a Raleigh SC30...I dunno that much about Raleighs since I've never lived anywhere that carried 'em. It's kind of a casual mountain bike...not quite a hybrid, but set so you sit pretty upright. And it has nifty tires mounted...smooth in the middle, but with knobbies on the side so it COULD handle at least packed dirt type trails. Not a bad bike.

*sigh* And there was a beat up old Mongoose Alta in my size with Rapid Fire shifters (had those and loved 'em) and other decent components from what I can tell...I've been out of the loop wayyyy too long! Looked like someone had upgraded some things...didn't all match.

I wants it, precious! Apparently they allow rental of used bikes, and the rental applies to the cost. I might. I just might.

Does it look like this?

You should really consider a bike for yourself. You and Jen could ride places together, and you'd save $$ on gas, right? ;)

Just a quick posting of some more gadgetry I came across. This time, it's (Japanese?) fold-flat "dinnerware". It comes in blue or red, and consists of a cup, dish, and plate. A "place setting" for two is about $24.

This might be of interest for backpacking, or putting into a bugout kit. Or it might just be neat.Use it along with your titanium flatware.

In further neepery news, I broke down and bought one of those Victorinox "Swissdata" knives. The USB drive is only 128MB, but it's enough for a hidden, password-protected partition to hold all my passwords, account info, and financial data (such as it is).

Finally, something called "the safepacker". Supposedly a disguised holster (wearing it on your belt or shoulder would seem a bit suspicious), it does have one major benefit. It was designed to protect the handgun, and the user, from damaging each other in rock climbing, rescues, (trailriding?) etc.

I got one for my Smith J-frame, and will report on it when I get some ambition up.

Hmm, vey cool. I wonder if the manufacturer thought to include a pocket for a day planner.

It reminds me a bit of a fanny pack. So, bear with me, if you want to keep it quiet that you are carrying, you can respond to the inevitable "what's that for" question with a response that it's for your day planner. Hehe.. I dunno, just a thought.

Heh... no... not you. Yeah, I'm still here at the airport. An endless stream of 'em have been crowding around the bar, insisting on jabbering endlessly and mostly unintelligibly.
