The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

What object was the sign of the authority of the Steward of Gondor?

I dunno...and I tried to look it up and still I'm not sure. The Seal? Is that it?

Maybe he's lunching with good revolutionaries... the sort in powdered wings who dress up as Indians and ruin good tea.

Heh...I think the ones in powdered wings are Gondorians.

I dunno if they "do lunch" either.

It was a carved ivory rod. You see it in Denethor's hands during his first audience with Gandalf and Pippin, and it's mentioned again in Appendix A. I think it's called the Steward's Sceptre.

They rise before dawn, take a morsel in the gray light, and go on about their duties. =]

"Suddenly Pippin was reminded of the hewn rocks of Argonath, and awe fell on him, as he looked down that avenue of kings long dead. At the far end upon a dais of many steps was set a high throne under a canopy of marble shaped like a crowned helm; behind it was carved upon the wall and set with gems an image of a tree in flower. But the throne was empty. At the foot of the dais, upon the lowest step which was broad and deep, there was a stone chair, black and unadorned, and on it sat an old man gazing at his lap. In his hand was a white rod with a golden knob. He did not look up. Solemnly they paced the long floor towards him, until they stood three paces from his footstool....

Then the old man looked up. Pippin saw his carven face with its proud bones and skin like ivory, and the long curved nose between the deep dark eyes; and he was reminded not so much of Boromir as of Aragorn."

Heh!

I took all the questions I have, the ones I was mentioning in the thread the other day, and am writing up a document, with my objectives, the questions, and a daily diary of data-collection. At the end, when the experiment is over, I'll write up a summary and determine the answers to my questions and whether or not this is a worthwhile endeavor.

Heh heh!!!

Actually, I was just discussing it with Matthew and he's going to help me with the data collection and actually type in some of it. I wish I'd thought of it sooner, before I came in here and plowed into it...I could have let it be his report, guided by me.

Oh well, he'll still learn the basics to data collection and documentation.

Well, I failed... or passed... depending on what the right answer is.

I didn't like the guy's attitude at the shop. He said there is no fuse that controls the gas gauge, and that it'd be $82... An hour's labor, just to find out what the problem with it is. I walked out. I think it's worth $100 to fix it, but not $100 to diagnose it, and another $100 or more to fix it.

Let's take it to Rick in Gig Harbor, next time we switch trucks.
