*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah. Kind of ironic. We have traveled all over south Texas and are back near where we started. For awhile it will be weekend commuting but we will be working towards moving. It's a long drive to some but we are used to it and I like driving.

It are too is a chicken snake.

Back when I had chickens at the barn, these snakes raided the nests each day to swallow the eggs. I did not harm them any of them. The only one that died made the mistake of crawling across an electric fence while leaving the coop.

That one hung around for a while..........

: )

Was that really a chicken snake? I thought they were big and black. I was thinking rattler until Tuffy pointed out the head.

Black racers may be what you are thinking of but my pictures are of a chicken snake.

A few years ago we had a drought and all the pasture grass dried up and turned brown. I started feeding round bales of hay in August and continued until the next May.

That Fall one bale I had picked up with the loader of the tractor and started down the farm road towards the pasture. I did not get very far from the barn and I noticed something moving around on the bale.

WTH, was my first thought but then I could see that it was a Black racer trying to find a way to get off the bale. Before I could stop the tractor and set the bale down, it made a flying leap off to the left side of the bale and hit the ground at full speed.

Sure was glad because I did not want it to crawl back into the seat and steering wheel to help me drive......

Yeah, probably that's what I'm thinking about. I'm with Rose though that all snakes dangerous. I would have thought that guy a rattler and wouldn't have stuck around to look at his head and probably have hurt myself:')

Hey, your property is gorgeous! You're very lucky to find such a nice place that's secluded like that.

I'm gonna rant so let me apologize in advance, in case I offend someone. I was at the Trinity River Horse Trials early today, a 3 day eventing. I was watching stadium jumping, they were incredible. Some of the jumps looked 5 feet tall. The riders were unbelievable, the most skilled riders in the business, imho. Then I went over to a Quarter Horse show and watched the western pleasure class, what a joke. How hard is it to look like a robot, never moving on the horse, horse barely moving? And the riders were much flashier than the horse, slinky shirts with sequins. The girls looked like they put their makeup on with a trowel. Was it a horse show or a fashion show, I ask you? And what's with the hand without the reins, in a fist, right by the saddle horn, never moving. Somebody put some batteries in the riders. There was absolutely no question who the better riders were and which horses were the most talented, between the western pleasure crowd and the 3 day eventers. I was embarrassed for the western pleasure riders because they didn't realize how ridiculous they looked.

Ah, well if it makes you feel better, I move around, wear old t-shirts and no make up when I ride:')

Hahahaha.
Three day eventers always amaze me and I have to give them lots of credit. Other riders that amaze me are the free style grand prix dressage riders. I could watch them forever.

I love watching dressage! The amount of training that goes into it is unimaginable. I used to think it was boring, until I watched western pleasure. It reaches new heights of boring.

I agree, Western pleasure has gotten painfully boring. Mannequin riders on robot horses.

That's not good for you! Where's your sunscreen? (I got a lot of room to talk, I never use sunscreen and I have freckles and red hair)

Well, you got the sunburning out of the way for the year then!

I think that property looks beautiful. Look forward to updates and pics as you get ready to move them. I can't tell much about whether the grass is too rich, it's awfully green, but it's also not too tall.

Wow! I love the trail pictures! All that lush greenery and the big trees are just amazing. And I love all the little bridges you have, especially the "U" shaped one. I've never seen one like that. Don't worry about boring us with trail pictures. I'll never get tired of looking at them! Thanks!
