This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Hey I just found out that my son is going to be roping over at the ranch tonight. I asked him if he minded if I came and took pictures to post. He just laughed and shook his head like I/we are all nuts here:)
Becky
I had a friend who put gold fish in her tank one time. Her tank froze solid that winter. But when the thing thawed out, the fish still lived:)
Becky
Hey, that reminds me, why haven't we seen any pictures of you and Mandy riding last night,,,,,HUH HUH:)
Becky
We have such a problem with rabies that I would not want any of them near but I hear they don't drink anyway.
We are cool now. He wasn't quit finished with another job and it was lightning so he's gonna see them tomorrow. The ferrier did say we should keep it wet around the tank to keep their hooves from drying out. What you think about that? (grin)
I forgot my damn camera.
Feeder goldfish just means "cheap". They are to feed to other fish, like Oscars and Piranhas and stuff. They're just like other goldfish, just not fancy and they're pretty hardy.... same kind you get at contests at the fair.
Anyway, a regular size water trough most people buy for a few horses is not near big enough to stay full or be an ecosystem, you'd have to feed them, and the horses would be drinking waste water. I don't think it's a good idea.
I prefer smaller water troughs filled daily to large ones that turn green and gunky anyhow.
I'm starting to think that idea is just a matter of opinion. From what I've always heard, wetting down the area around the water tub for the horses feet is just an old wives tale. Do a search on it and you'll see people that think both ways so who knows. Whatever works for ya, I guess. I don't like to do that but I forget to turn the water off so much that it's kind of happening anyway. George is so prone to thrush that I really do prefer to keep his feet as dry as possible.
Oh, I'm not the only one that does that:)
Becky
So does that mean you're doing it? ;~D
We're home again... had to go to town shopping, and we dropped off all the winter horse blankets to be washed and repaired. After a season on 24-7, they get pretty ripe, as you can imagine ;~D I washed them myself one year, and decided never again ;~D It's $7 for her to wash them, and she makes repairs too, cheap.
We don't have a float yet. Ours is a 100 gallon and we have to fill it every two / three days. When I re filled it, it was clean. Just a new toy for the boys here.
I don't think leaving a little mud around the water trough makes a bit of difference on feet... but I wet down the paddock when it's dry just to keep the dust down.
Yeah, I'll go, nothing else to do tonight. Roping is a pretty boring spectator sport, but I need pictures of Charlie roping anyway for my slide show. I just hope they get started before dark. It's an outdoor arena, that is lite pretty good. How will pictures come out after dark?
For $7 I'd let her do it too. That is very cheap. We have one saddle shop around that will do that, and they charge like $20 to do one.
Becky
Well, I didn't ask, but that's what she was last year. Heh.. Two blankets each horse, it adds up... But as clean as they come out when she does it, it'd still be worth it at $20. When I washed Bay's big insulated one, I did it in a kiddie pool outside, and when it was wet I couldn't lift it! It was like trying to drag a body!
I asked Charlie if he minded mostly because of the guys he ropes with. I don't want to embarrass him, this guys can be pretty ruthless. But Joe, the one that owns the arena and cows likes our family so he won't care, but he does tease Charlie about his momma:) When Charlie was learning to rope, I'd go watch and when his horse would act up in the box, I tended to gasp and say "Charrrlllliiiieeee":). When ever Joe sees me he always went "Oh Charrrllllliiiieee", till the night Charlie got throwed off and knocked out (I wasn't there then). Joe told me later, he hollered OH Charrrlllliiiieeee, when he saw it happening:). He's never teased me again.
You know tho, a mother taking pictures of her 27 year old son, could cause some embarrassment:)
Becky
Heh - Maybe a little, but most of them have moms too, some of them might even wish theirs wanted to come watch ;~D
I've heard, but have never tried that taking them to the car wash and clamping them up in the floor mat clamps works good. But you'd still have to deal with the weight of them. I guess if you had a truck you could just throw them in the back till you got home and some of the water dried.
I can see where doing it in a kiddie pool would be difficult.
Becky
"You know tho, a mother taking pictures of her 27 year old son, could cause some embarrassment:)"
Do it anyway, we want pictures!
Well Charlie thinks I'm nuts, but he doesn't care if I come.
Becky
