This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I should have pinged you to the last bike rider thread I was on. It was funny, most people were complaining about the bikers who think they own the road but there were a couple of bike riders on that thread to make it interesting. They thought that if they were on a narrow road then the cars should just stay behind them. I posted the story, a lady in this area bumped a biker when he wouldn't get out of the way.
I've been thinking about riding to work. It's about 6 miles. We have right the opposite problem here though. There are really nice bike lanes most of the time but bikers get no respect. The lanes used to pass. Several bikers have been killed since I've been here. One was the owner of a large car dealership.
If people were riding to work, I might understand it not always being convienent to use the bike trails. But the people here are not riding to work. You run into them in the evenings and on the weekends. Groups of them.
I'd just like to hear an explanation of why they are on the roads when we have sooooooooo many miles of bike trails that are all beautiful, well maintained, and just as near for them to use as being out here on our roads. I just want to know why:)

It takes time.
Drowned in our horse water....
Poor thing.... I hadn't seen them ever trying to drink from the big buckets, I leave other water out for them in a small bucket... I wish I'd have been able to know he fell in there! The water level was down too far for him to crawl out. Not wanting that to happen again, I put a rope in the trough so they always have a way out.
me "no"
Him "well, ah, why not?"
Me "caz I don't want to go thru that again. Okie was sore for two weeks the last time and then we had to put them back on caz his hoof cracking and Sarah Lees feet looked like %^$# when I got her. If it's a medical need for Sarah Lee ok, but otherwise I want them shoed"
him "wellll ok. If he recommends taking them off, well we want him to remove them, right?"
Me "No. Only if Sarah Lee has an infection or something. I want the shoes to stay on if both ok.
Him
well ok... You know though that none of the other horses around here....
Me, interupting "I don't care what the "other horses do"
Him" I'll just have him call me, ok?"
Me " Tell your brother not to put ideas in the ferriers head".
I guess I better stop here. The rest all downhill. If they take those shoes off anyway....I should have just sneaked out this morning while he was still asleep.
Oh how sad.
Have you heard of putting a gold fish in the water to keep the tanks clean. That's what all the other horses "do" around here.
I have a bunch of snails in my fish tank, and I tried putting some of them out there once, but they didn't make it.
Goldfish are really dirty fish, I can't imagine it would stay clean... they might eat mosquito larvae if we had a huge tank, but we empty and refill ours almost every day so it's not a problem.
I hear ya on the farrier talk.
Well I got my two horses rode today. It's really getting hot now. I've been out messing around in the garden. I moved my hummingbird feeders into the branches of my tree. I think where I had them in the full sun, the stuff might have been going bad quicker, I haven't seen as many hummers as I did at first. I hope putting them in the shade helps, altho I don't know how well hummers adjust to change:). Anyway after moving them that left the hanger empty so I had to go to Walmart and get some hanging baskets and a few flowers.
I'm so sorry about your squirrels. I've found my stupid chickens in the water trough before. That's a good idea about the rope tho. I never would have thought about doing that. Did you give the little guy a proper burial:)
Becky
We hucked him over the fence into the bushes .... maybe the coyote will find him ;~D
I've never attracted many hummingbirds here, even when the stuff is fresh, and the stuff out there now is old. I don't think I mix it right or something. My dad goes through a big feederful a day - they ~drain~ it.
Sounds like a proper burial to me:)
I've tried lots of different kinds of humming bird feed. The best one I've found that they like is called First Nature. Of course I don't know if you can get it anywhere but Wal mart:)
Dad just uses regular sugar and water, it's not even red.
My turn. You lost me:')
LOL If I put goldfish in my horses water, my cats would be sitting there fishing! LOL : D
I had a similar mishap, but I got home just in time to save the squirrel. I drove up and saw Tuffy trying to get a drink of water but kept backing off. Thinking there was probably a snake in there, I went to investigate. It was a squirrel, frantically trying to get out but the water wasn't high enough. I thought of filling the tub all the way up and letting the squirrel get out that way but it was already too tired and heading down. I grabbed a flower box jump that was right there and put one end down in the water. The squirrel grabbed on and rested while I got the dogs away. He scampered out and was too weak to even climb a tree. He finally got the strength to run off.
I did have one squirrel drown in a tub but it must have been dead for quite a while, it was bloated up to 4 times the normal size.
I hate it when people question what I want. Tell them you want the horses shoes reset, the end, end of story. You have your reasons, if they don't like it, tough cookies.
"LOL If I put goldfish in my horses water, my cats would be sitting there fishing! LOL : D"
Me too. No way could I put fish in the horses water and have them survive more than a day or 2.
"We hucked him over the fence into the bushes"
LOL the coyotes around here get dead guinea pigs and one dead banty rooster.
