*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

But I'd still have the problem if I incubated my own eggs of having to deal with too many roosters right?

I like the crowing, so do the workers next door:)

I have done what you do also, let them all in to eat. Really, I got tired of the mares peeing as soon as they got in their stalls, which meant even when I wasn't stalling them at night, I had to clean stalls ;~D

I can feed the two mares outside together without issues if Bay isn't a part of it. The pony only gets one scoop, but she's low-man. Cyn gets three, and she's a picky slow eater. Bay gets two, and he'd rather have Cyns that doesn't have the pills in it ;~D

So I bring him in and feed him just inside the yard, usually they're almost done by the time I get hay tossed and water filled.

Maybe that would work for you? Just let Bud through the gate (doing whatever manners work you need to do) and feed the others where they are? It's at least a different routine.

I bought those rubber ground pans, and drilled holes in them to tie them to fence posts so they stay within reach over the fence. The horses mostly go stand by their pans when I'm coming, instead of crowding me.

I honestly don't think there is any cure for a horses moving from pan to pan if they are loose together, except among themselves. But if the leader of the pack does it, I don't think he would stop unless a person was there constantly. He may stop as long as you are there, but I'd bet money the minute you leave he'd start again, even if you guarded for a long time. Unless you have horses that eat the same amount and same thing all the time, I think they need to be seperated for grain rations.

Yup.... I thought it was worth a try this morning, but I'm gonna pull him in the yard tonight, like we'd been doing. ;~D

If I had a flock of just roosters, would they be OK....
I'm pretty sure that they'll still fight with each other. A friend of mine has chickens and she's having the same problem that you're having, and even just having the roosters, they still fight.

when we are on vcation, this working so well means that if we see a good property that we are interested in, i could take pics with my camera, use the card reader to download to photobucket and post the pics and ask u all what you think, whilst still there! Technology! : D

That's really neat! Is having a mobile wireless internet connection like that expensive?

I think, Becky, that you'll still end up needing to dispose of some roosters who end up overly aggressive, but it's possible you might be able to arrive at a bachelor group of those with more manageable temperaments. I know many have bred roosters ~for~ aggression, it would seem a few might have tried to breed them for less ;~D

I guess you can't neuter roosters ;~D

the monthly charges vary by usage, it can be as low as $29 a month or like we have got $79 for unlimited access. For us its worth it! We use it at home as well. Our home system is satelite because land line is as slow as molasses. that is a pretty expensive set up.

I love this though, it means we can browse property and not waste time.
We are now at the store and deaconjim has gone in to get the feed whilst i am typing this to you. It feels weird to say the least!
Wherever you can get cingular reception, you have access to the internet

To caponize?

Most people do it themselves. Just hold the chicken down, make a slit in the side of them, spread the ribs and pull the testicles out.

Capons get HUGH! Great big massive birds. Kinda like Baby Huey...cept he was a duck, I think...

Heh heh! Which is why I didn't bring it up.

But lotsa people do it...and you can find capons in the grocery store.

I wouldn't do it either. It takes a lot of skill and a lot of, um, expendable chickens to learn on. I'm just not inclined.

you have to buy a PC card, but sometimes with rebates and sign up, it works out that the card is free. I have a small areial on the side of my laptop, like a cellphones, that picks up the signal.
BTW this is the first new computer I have ever owned and I guess i went big time with it! LOL The whole system with a lot of upgrades on memory etc should have been way over $2000 but i got it on special with nstant rebates for $1500.

There was a cool horse trailer at the store for sale, with a semi truck front, huge living quarters, only $235,000! WHew!
