This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
He's not sound so I don't mess with him at all. He only comes up at feeding time. You know, I've had him for 7-8 years or so and this just started.
All the suggestions are excellent. I'm going to use all of them! Different day, different tactic, keep him guessing.
He has a LARGE ego, that's for sure. This really has been his only problem. After he's in and eaten, he's calm as a cucumber, doesn't even seem like the same horse.
I'm kidding, I won't cut Bud up. Except for this one problem, he's a sweetie. He's actually good for a few things, he can be lightly ridden, I use him for a companion horse if I have to haul one of the others to the vet and he's really good at knocking other horses egos down a peg or 2. I bought this really bad bully horse one time, he picked on all the other horses. I put him in the pasture with Bud and this SOB when after him. Bud kicked his ass in no uncertain terms. Bud never picks fights but he'll finish them.
Just a thought, you say the only time he's like this is when he hasnt eaten..........maybe he gets low sugars?
Can horses be diabetic?
I am sure they can. It would explain him feeling like C^*P before eating and getting upset. I know Duchess wanted to test one of her mares once.......Might be worth checking into.

But, just for grins, I found a site that does seem to talk about diabetes in horses... Overweight despite diet and lethargy seem to be the symptoms.
I only wish Bud was lethargic.

You know tho, if you let him go first, he may not take off since the others weren't following. If you let him out first, would he be able to run to the gate they are standing at, which is what he may do. But then if he was standing there, you could go to the barn and rattle his feed and he might come, but I bet he'd come slow, because he'd be torn between feed and his buddies.
It's just hard to tell what horses will do.

I have a question you might be able to answer.
If I had a flock of just roosters, would they be OK....
We don't eat very many eggs around here, Macks allergic, and I can take them or leave them.
It's hard to get rid of extra roosters, and if you have hens and too many roosters it's not a pretty thing.
I'm giving away my hens this morning, but am keeping 2 roosters as the person I'm giving them too doesn't want them. I'm really tired of messing with chickens, especially since my poor hens are sooooo beat up. We killed a whole bunch of roosters awhile back and I just don't feel right about doing that. Kill them for no reason other then their roosters, you know.
But I've been thinking I can get all the roosters I want from friends who are in the same dilema I'm in, but they want thier hens. So I'm thinking of getting roosters to keep the bugs down will that work.

I would think it would be ok if there were NO hens around. There might be more fighting, and of course a LOT more crowing. But I doubt they'd kill each other.
Have you considered guineas? They are supposedly the BEST for bug control and they just run wild on your property and roost in the trees. You would have to coop them long enough to get them grown up, but then they're very territorial and will stick around.
Speaking of feeding issues.... When mine are left out at night, as they were last night, we feed in three ground pans along the paddock fence, and then throw hay over. Well, we've been having to pull Bay into the yard and feed him seperate, because he goes pan shopping, making everyone else shuffle.
He can't do that, because his pills are in his own, and he needs those, and Cyn gets a full scoop more than he does, and she eats really slow. Well, he'd been better, and Cyn has learned to eat a little faster without dawdling so much, so I tried feeding them together this morning. Bay tried pan shopping, but I just kept spraying him with the hose if he tried to move to Cyn's pan. Brat. He eventually ate his own, but I'm gonna have to keep feeding him seperate and waiting on him to finish to put him back in. It's funny, because Cyn figured out I was protecting her with the hose right away and she actually got emboldened by that, raising her foot to threaten him if he started over. Heh... she never does that without me protecting her.
That was funny. Using the water hose is ingenious. I'd have to spray Bud in the face, though. He loves the water.
The scenario you describe is exactly why I bring them in every day to feed. I feed them very little, because they are all so fat, but they each get different meds, supplements, amount of daily wormer, etc. Bud loves to pan shop.
guineas are SO noisy!
